Rogers on El-Sayed: "Why Would We Vote Someone Into The Senate Who Couldn't Get A Security Clearance?"

Republican Michigan Senate candidate Mike Rogers joins "FOX & Friends" to discuss his debate with Democratic opponent Abdul El-Sayed.

CHANLEY PAINTER, FOX NEWS: And in Michigan Mike Rogers and Abdul El-Sayed facing off in the Senate debate last night with affordability taking center stage. The two candidates clashing over prescription drugs.

ABDUL EL-SAYED (D), SENATE CANDIDATE: He wants to continue to be Big Pharma's champion. He called himself Big Pharma's champion. Took more money from the pharmaceutical industry than any member of Congress. More than any member of Congress in the Michigan delegation.

MIKE ROGERS (R), SENATE CANDIDATE: There are 2 million Michigan families today who are on Medicare enjoying Part D prescription drugs, which I did champion because there was no prescription drug coverage under Medicare, which I thought was a terrible idea.

PAINTER: Recent Fox News polling shows El-Sayed holds a slim one point lead among likely voters. However, 52% say they're very or extremely concerned his positions are too liberal. Well, El-Sayed avoiding answering a major question on Iran. Watch this.

MODERATOR: Who do you think's a bigger threat to the United States, Israel or Iran? You have 60 seconds.

EL-SAYED: And again, Rick, I'm just going to say that that's a ridiculous hypothetical.

MODERATOR: I'll ask one last time. Israel or Iran?

EL-SAYED: That's again a ridiculous question. I think both of them have proven dangerous in their own way.

PAINTER: And guys, we only have 25 days until Election Day.

BRIAN KILMEADE, FOX NEWS: Joining us now is the man on the other side of that debate. Senate candidate Mike Rogers. Senator, what a brawl yesterday. He did phenomenally well. I know he's unorthodox. He's not like somebody you want up against. What is your takeaway from this after seeing him and going head to head?

ROGERS: Well, I thought this was really important. We exposed him for who he really is. I mean, this guy has been the ultimate con man, can't answer questions on Medicare for all, refuses to tell you that you lose your health, your private health insurance on.

Think of Iran. He couldn't answer the question on a country that has attempted terrorist attacks in the United States. Oh, and by the way, has blood of U.S. soldiers on his hands. I mean, this guy is absolutely dangerous. And I think what we were able to do is show he says one thing, does another thing, wants to present the one one set of facts when the when the real facts just don't match it up to me.

LAWRENCE JONES, FOX NEWS:Let's play. Let's play that exchange because I want our audience to hear that portion of the debate because it's disqualifying. Let's play it.

MODERATOR: Who do you think is a bigger threat to the United States? Israel or Iran? You have 60 seconds.

EL-SAYED: Again, Rick. I'm just going to say that that's a ridiculous hypothetical.

MODERATOR: I'll ask one last time. Israel or Iran?

EL-SAYED: That's again a ridiculous question. I think both of them have proven dangerous in their own way.

JONES: Shocking congressman.

ROGERS: Oh, my God. He's the equivalent of the biggest state sponsor in the world with blood on their hands from just about every country in the Middle East and beyond, including U.S. soldiers. He can't answer the question who the good guy is and who the bad guy is.

If you can't answer that question, you have no business walking into the United States Senate. This guy could not get a security clearance. Why would we vote somebody into the Senate who couldn't get a security clearance if he needed one?

I just think that to me, you're exactly exactly right, was the moment we exposed who exactly he is. And he's dangerous, extreme. And if he can't figure out that the Americans and our allies are the good guys and people like the IRGC and the Iranians are the bad guys. I worry about the future of the country.

AINSLEY EARHARDT, FOX NEWS: Well, tell us about the makeup of Michigan. Why is Barack Obama there campaigning for him and doing this rally in two weekends for him on the 24th? Is that to get the black vote because he didn't do well with the black vote voters in in Detroit when he was running in the primary? And why now is he trying to distance himself from Hassan Piker when he was campaigning with him in the primary?

ROGERS: Yeah, so he lost the Detroit vote by 67 percent. His opponent got into the city of Detroit. That's a huge number. And we have been making inroads into the black community in Detroit. You know, the Democrats walked by the city of Detroit 50 years ago and they just stopped looking. They just came to collect votes.

And so we've made huge inroads with the black vote in the city and other Democrats around the southeast. And so they're hemorrhaging. If you can't consolidate the black vote, that's why they brought in Barack Obama.

The problem is, is he's been saying how terrible Barack Obama was. And so I think this is going to backfire. Even people we're talking to down in the city are saying, hey, this guy hated Barack Obama. He hates blacks. There's no way in heck I can vote for this guy. And that is the environment he has created in the city of Detroit.

KILMEADE: And Mike, I got two pages of his negative comments on Barack Obama. But with his most disqualifying is that he does not like oil and gas in a car state. Does not like it. So instead of saying oil and gas is so high, I'm going to blame President Trump. What would you do? This guy wants to stop the pipeline that goes through one of the one of the Great Lakes.

He says, Abdul El-Sayed in 2021, he wants to disband Chevron, Exxon and Saudi Aramco. They should no longer exist. OK, he wants to run on wind and solar and renewables. That ship has sailed, pun intended, right there. Unless he's going to say he had a brain aneurysm in 2021. How does he explain that?

ROGERS: He can't. This is like a glitchy AI chatbot. He just repeats the same thing. Well, your gas prices are higher. Gas prices are higher. He has no answer, no solution. He believes in 100 percent renewables within 10 years. What that would do to people's costs for their homes, their utilities, by the way, auto workers. I don't know if he noticed we build cars in Michigan. It's kind of shocking gas cars. You might want to take a tour of the state.

Trump Supports Livestreaming Execution Of Fort Hood Shooter: "Did I Approve? Absolutely I Did"

President Trump gave his endorsement to livestream the public execution of Fort Hood shooter Nidal Hasan, who was sentenced to death for killing 13 people at the Texas military base in 2009. Secretary of War Pete Hegseth announced on Thursday that the firing squad execution of Hasan would be public "because people need to understand that there's serious consequences for these types of things."

"Have you authorized or approved the execution -- the livestreamed execution of the Fort Hood [shooter]?" a reporter asked.

"Did I approve? Absolutely I did," Trump responded.

"To livestream it?" the reporter asked.

Trump nodded yes.

"We're giving a man the death penalty who killed 14 soldiers...death penalty through firing squad. He deserves it."

Stephen Miller: Democrats Have Become The "Jihad Party" By Embracing Mamdani, El-Sayed, and MN Somali Refugees

White House deputy chief of staff for policy Stephen Miller says the Democratic Party is "coast to coast" made up of DSA candidates and cowards who won't condemn them on "Hannity."

SEAN HANNITY: Despite bipartisan backlash, Mora -- well, sorry, Mayor Zohran Marxist commie Mamdani is doubling down on his anti-Israel October 7th message, again accusing Israel, the victim of terrorism, of genocide. Explain that logic. Take a listen.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

REPORTER: Do you believe you made any missteps that inflamed tensions in this very difficult moment for a lot of New Yorkers?

MAYOR ZOHRAN MAMDANI (D), NEW YORK CITY: I believe that there must be room to mourn every single life. There must be room to mourn the lives of the more than 1,100 Israelis that Hamas killed three years ago. There must be room to mourn the 74,000 Palestinians that the Israeli government has killed since. It is a day that is continuing in the Israeli government's use of it as a justification for a genocide.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

HANNITY: We went through that last night. Not true.

Here with reaction, deputy chief of staff of policy and homeland security advisor, Stephen Miller, is with us.

All right. A lot to unpack here. Dying to get your take on all of it.

STEPHEN MILLER, DEPUTY CHIEF OF STAFF OF POLICY AND HOMELAND SECURITY ADVISOR: Well, fundamentally, Sean, what we're dealing with here is a Democrat Party from coast to coast that is embracing jihadism. You have, of course, the mayor of New York City that refuses to simply mourn the victims of the October 7th atrocity without also trying to make a statement justifying the "violent resistance", quote/unquote, that has taken place by terrorists in Palestinian territory.

Then you have Abdul El-Sayed in Michigan, a candidate who campaigned with Hassan Piker, an openly pro-terrorist, pro-jihad, anti-American extremist who celebrated 9/11. You have in Minnesota an entire statewide political leadership system, Walz, Klobuchar, the whole state, Keith Ellison, that continue to shield, protect, harbor, and support the radicalized members of the Somali refugee community. even on the heels of the FBI stopping what would have been a mass casualty terrorist attack by a Somali ISIS supporter at the Mall of America.

You have a Democrat Party at every single level that refuses to side with the American military and the American president, the American government. in combat operations against the Iranian regime, which has spread death, terror and destruction all over the world. And you also have a Democrat Party that continues to support Islamist jihad migration into every part of this country.

When President Trump came into office in his first term, he put a travel ban on terrorist hotspots. The Democrat Party opened the floodgates of those same hotspots. President Trump shut those gates again. But every single day, Democrats are agitating to bring massive flows of refugees from the most pro-jihad areas of the planet into the United States. The Democrat Party has become, Sean, a jihad party.

HANNITY: It's not just El Sayed. It's not just Talarico. You got Annie Andrews in South Carolina.

You got Adam Hamilton in Kansas. You got Sherrod Brown in Ohio. You got Nixon in my free state of Florida.

I mean, it is now coast to coast, north, south, east, west. It's everywhere. So, the question is, does this become a referendum election? Because we know that the intellectual base of the Democratic Party will be controlled by this group of radicals. They are the power structure now.

You could even say they have way surpassed the establishment Democrats. Have they not?

MILLER: Yes. Well, I mean, you've heard President Trump say it. Chuck Schumer's become a Palestinian. That's where we're at right now.

The Democratic Party has only two kinds of people in it in Washington today. You have Democrat socialist extremists who support jihad, open borders, abolish jails, abolish prisons, abolish ICE, abolish border patrol, abolish free markets, abolish fossil fuels, abolish capitalism.

And you have the cowards, like Schumer, like former Senator Brown, who will do whatever they are told to do, they are ordered to do, by AOC and Jayapal and Sayed and every other person in that crazy, dangerous clown car that is the Democrat Party.

And when you talk about this being from coast to coast, it's the House candidates, it's the Senate candidates, mayoral candidates, gubernatorial candidates at every single level of the Democrat Party. They're running candidates who embrace jihadism, who embrace open borders and who oppose law enforcement.

Compare that to the pro-American Trump agenda. Record setting energy production, record low taxes, record tax breaks for working families, no tax on tips, no tax on Social Security, no tax on overtime, sealing the southern border, shut -- shutting down dangerous migration, unleashing the power of the private sector, record job creation, record wage growth.

This is the clearest choice you will ever have. Oh, and by the way, the military is stronger than it's ever been before because this is a president who puts America first.

HANNITY: All right. Stephen Miller, we appreciate it as always.

RCP Podcast: Debate Night Gets Personal, Letitia James Draws a Blank, The Case for Primary Reform

Friday on the RealClearPolitics podcast, Carl Cannon, Tom Bevan, and Andrew Walworth discuss a contentious night of debates, including Mike Rogers and Abdul El-Sayed clashing in Michigan; Jon Ossoff's personal attacks on Mike Collins in Georgia; Letitia James' rocky performance in New York; and Susan Collins demanding an apology from her Democratic opponent in Maine.

Nick Troiano, author of "The Primary Solution" and director of "Unite America," joins the show to discuss how to fix the broken primary system that contributes to political polarization and delivers substandard candidates on both sides.

Plus, remembering legendary Chicago Bears coach Mike Ditka, the debate over an ICE shooting in New York City, and the week's "You Cannot Be Serious" moments.

18:15 - The Primary Problem

Nick Troiano, author of "The Primary Solution" and director of "Unite America," explains potential reforms for low-turnout partisan primaries that he says are responsible for much of the country's political dysfunction. He advocates open primaries and ranked-choice voting as possible solutions.

New Poll: Voters Say Primaries Reward Partisan Bases, Sideline Ordinary Voters

"We call it the primary problem for a reason, because it's not the only problem, but it's the biggest one and the biggest solvable one that actually exacerbates the other challenges," he said. "Our Congress is not representative and responsive to a true majority of voters. And that's what we've got to fix."

"Sixteen states are the worst offenders. Those are states that only Democrats and Republicans can participate in their respective primaries. And if you're an independent voter, you're essentially locked out," he said. "On the other end of the spectrum, you have states with open all-candidate primaries for federal and state office. There are three of those: Alaska, California, and Washington."

38:42 - ICE Shooting in New York

The group examines reports that ICE agents shot a man in the Bronx last night and Mayor Zohran Mamdani's response.

Should we blame sanctuary city policies or slapdash ICE enforcement? "It's like both sides are right, but they won't see the other side's point of view," Cannon said. "But you can't have officers shooting into a vehicle with a five-year-old in it."

42:23 - You Cannot Be Serious

In this week's "You Cannot Be Serious," Tom Bevan calls out Scott Galloway's criticism of Elon Musk, Carl Cannon highlights an exchange between Spencer Pratt and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, and Andrew Walworth examines an unusual consequence of Alaska's ranked-choice voting system.

Mark Penn: Talarico's "Super Odd" Disappearance From The Campaign Trail "Is A Loss Of Momentum"

Stagwell CEO and former Clinton adviser Mark Penn reacts to the disappearance of Texas Democratic U.S. Senate nominee James Talarico from the campaign trail.

BILL MELUGIN, FOX NEWS: Well, Sandra, the dead heat Texas Senate race turning into a little bit of a campaign mystery. It's because Democrat James Talarico has been off the trail for almost two weeks now. His campaign says he's got the flu, but his Republican opponent, Ken Paxton, is demanding answers.

And now some leaked messages show some of Talarico's own volunteers are worrying that he's, quote, losing momentum. For more on this, we're joined by former Clinton adviser and Stagwell CEO, Mark Penn. Mark, good afternoon to you, and thanks for joining us today.

So it's been about 13 days since Talarico was seen on the trail. There's all sorts of rumors flying around, but regardless of what's being said, it doesn't seem ideal that you'd be off the trail in the final stretch here with just a few weeks to go to Election Day. Your thoughts on what's going on here?

MARK PENN: Oh, this is super odd. There's no question about that. These are the final days of a $100 million campaign, a major effort in one of the most key Senate races, and your candidate disappears for 12, 13 days with no clear word, no messages, no ability to kind of send out some messages, has the flu.

This doesn't, this really doesn't make sense, and I can't imagine, in fact, I've never seen this happen in any campaign in 40 or 50 years that I did campaign work, ever. It's unbelievable.

MELUGIN: Well, the last time that Talarico spoke publicly was on October 1st last week, and that's when he said he was feeling sick and even had to go to urgent care. Take a listen.

JAMES TALARICO (D), TEXAS SENATE CANDIDATE: I was starting to feel kind of under the weather a few days ago, and last night it got so bad that I went to the urgent care here in Dallas, and I was diagnosed with the flu.

MELUGIN: And Talarico's campaign just put a statement out today where they're trying to address this. They say in part, quote, James looks forward to being back out this weekend after recovering from the flu. It's been 84 days since James challenged Ken Paxton to come out of hiding and answer Texans' questions in a debate, which even President Trump called on him to do this week. Ball is in Paxton's court, end quote. So they're saying Talarico's going to be back on the trail this weekend. Do you buy that he's, this is all him being sick, or do you think there's something else going on?

PENN: Look, if he's coming back, he's coming back, but I kind of highly doubt that it was the flu. I mean, we've had presidents who were shot who gave interviews either contemporaneously or within hours, let alone somebody who got the flu and wouldn't want to keep the momentum of his campaign going with kind of a constant flood. We had a president that was unable to really do significant interviews and broadcast from his basement for a year.

So we've seen a lot of people handle these things differently. I've never seen this happen this way. It is mysterious. I think the people are going to want a better explanation than, oh, sorry, had the flu back now.

MELUGIN: And one of the people who wants that explanation is his Republican opponent, Ken Paxton. He's trying to capitalize on this. He had a rally in San Antonio on Wednesday, and he talked about Talarico being MIA. Take a listen.

KEN PAXTON (R), TEXAS SENATE CANDIDATE: Where do you think they hid that little socialist? So I want you to help me because the media hasn't been really asking, where is he? They would be asking where I was after two minutes. One, two, three. Where is James Talarico? Perfect. Maybe we'll get an answer for that.

MELUGIN: So Mark, you got Paxton poking him a little bit there, and then you've got Talarico's campaign saying this isn't a big deal, he's going to be back out on the trail this weekend. Got about a minute left here. Give us your final thoughts.

PENN: Well, look, I think the campaign is going to resume. And I think, unfortunately for Paxton, he's going to say, here I am, and he's going to have a cheering crowd. So I think that'll be that. But still, when you're running a campaign like this, and as close as this campaign is, and the amount of money, I think, involved in this campaign to be out for two weeks, that is a setback. That is a loss of momentum. That is a problem for any campaign.

And I'll be surprised if he did better off the campaign trail in terms of the polling than he would have done had he been on the campaign trail, never seen anything quite like this.

Abby Phillip: If You're Abdul El-Sayed, You Have To Wonder Why You're "Asked Constantly To Address Terrorism"

CNN anchor Abby Phillip discusses the questions surrounding Democratic Michigan Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed and his views on terrorism on Thursday's edition of "NewsNight."

ABBY PHILLIP, CNN ANCHOR: Peter, let me ask you, let me ask you this, because, again, this is this is why the reason I'm asking this is because this is these questions are being asked of Abdul El-Sayed because he is Muslim. And Bernie Sanders wants to cut off aid and military weapons to Israel as well.

Right. There are maybe 45 Democrats in the Senate at this point who would vote for that at this point. A lot of a lot of mainstream Democrats have that view.

Just to play devil's advocate, you know, as Van is making this point. If you're Abdul El-Sayed, you're wondering, why is it that he is being asked constantly to address terrorism when he's talking about the economy? The only retort on the other side is addressing terrorism, addressing terror attacks, addressing Iran, addressing all of these other things. That's the I think that's the question, I think, that if you're Abdul El-Sayed, you're wondering.

FORMER REP. PETER MEIJER (R-MI), CNN CONTRIBUTOR: If he kept trying to answer the same question and he answered it clearly, I would totally agree with that. And this is where I get back to if you believe that, you know, Iran and Israel are either equal parts or Israel's more threat to the U.S. than Iran. What the hell?

Right. If your first reaction to, again, a terrorist attack in the state that you choose to represent that happened in March against the synagogue. If your first reaction is hurt people, hurt people. The reaction with the Khamenei killing was I don't really know what to say because a lot of people that I know feel very hurt right now because they were his supporters. Right. Again, we're not talking about some nebulous entity. We're talking about foreign terrorist organizations that are declared so and have been recognized as such by Republican and Democratic administrations who have the blood of thousands of Americans.

Carville: "Is Trump Trying To Lose?" "There's Nothing That He Does That's Consistent With Trying To Win"

On the "Politics War Room" podcast, co-host James Carville questions whether Trump is trying to sabotage Republicans, arguing that his behavior appears inconsistent with trying to win.

AL HUNT, CO-HOST: You know, James, my first check on election polls, which I actually suspect are pretty accurate, is I go to Real Clear Politics, there'll be a dozen races there. What I first do is look on the right-hand side where it's color-coordinated, blue for D and red for R's. It's a sea of blue almost every day with only a couple reds.

With less than four weeks, it looks like a wave. I worry a little bit about the GOP's massive money advantage. I worry more that Trump is going to try to intimidate voters and steal the election. But one thing I'm not worried about is Donald Trump out there campaigning. He is out of control. He suggested Iran might bomb Los Angeles and San Diego. He denied he said it or didn't mean it. It was actually on tape.

He said there's almost no inflation. There's actually 3.4% inflation, higher than when he took office. But it doesn't matter what he says. People know there's inflation. I mean, you can't tell people they don't feel something when they feel it. He called Democrats dumb sons of bitches. Panicking a little bit, Mr. President?

He goes into Nebraska, Nebraska, except he avoided Omaha, where there really is an important house race. Any Democrat out there, James, and in a competitive race, there should be a simple message to Mr. Trump. Come on in, baby. We like having you here.

JAMES CARVILLE: Yes. And the Nebraska trip was to a place called Grand Island, Nebraska, which is in Hall County, Nebraska, of which he got, I think, 69% of the vote. I just got to keep asking the same question. Is Trump trying to lose? I mean, there's nothing that he does that's consistent with trying to win. There's probably not much he can do.

He is the central issue in the campaign. He dominates everything. But I got to keep asking, is he trying to do this? Is he just want to screw the congressional Republicans? Does he hate them? I don't know. There's some other explanation for this behavior. It might be that he's just out of his goddamn mind. Who knows?

But he is a man of real grievances, and this behavior is the only thing that can really explain it, is he's clinically insane, or he wants the Republicans to lose. I don't think there's any other explanation for it.

President Donald Trump participates in the Golden Age of American Innovation Summit at the Institute of Peace, highlighting his administration's push to accelerate U.S. innovation, investment and technological leadership.

PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP: For 250 years, the United States has led the world in innovation and transformed the lives of countless people using science and technology.

We tamed electricity, invented the light bulb, developed the airplane, harnessed the atom, unleashed the power of personal computers, created the internet, pioneered superintelligence, and invented almost everything else of genius and great importance anywhere in the world.

Tom Bevan: If Polls Are Overestimating Democrats By Two Points, Republicans Will Keep The Senate

RCP co-founder Tom Bevan, Guy Benson, and Adrienne Elrod join Bret Baier on FOX News Channel's "Special Report" to discuss Secretary of State Marco Rubio's speech this week in Greece and what the latest polls say about Democrats' chances for taking the Senate:

BRET BAIER: In Texas, the president is calling for a Paxton-Talarico debate. He did that on Truth Social. Talarico has agreed to a debate. Paxton declined, proclaiming the host would be biased, not responding to invitations. So Talarico offered to host a debate on Fox News. He even mentioned this show. Thank you. But there is no response yet.

Now there is this missing in action for James Talarico. Supposedly he has had the flu, but we have not seen him on the campaign trail in 10, 11 days? 12 days?

TOM BEVAN: I have had the flu. I don't know if it's ever lasted 12 days in the middle of a campaign. You can't do a Zoom? It must be a bad case.

This race is obviously one of the marquee races. Millions of dollars spent. President Trump has been there three times already. Republicans think they are going to pull this out because Paxton, as flawed as he is, has already won three times statewide.

But overall, Democrats are ahead in the polls. In six Senate races, if the polls are on target, they would net six Senate seats. But if the polls are overstating Democratic support by two points, or Republicans outperform by two points, they will keep the Senate.

BRET BAIER: Texas is like Charlie Brown, Lucy and the football for Democrats. It gets yanked away at the last second, it seems.

BRET BAIER, HOST: I mean, it's hard to believe, but we're going to get to the midterms, and then we are going to figure and obsess on who's running for president. And it'll become evident in the days after the midterms, I think, Tom.

TOM BEVAN: For sure. And the shadow campaign's already happening, particularly on the Democratic side, because the race is so wide open, you see everybody jockeying for position. But with this speech, I mean, this is Rubio's wheelhouse.

There is no better person to tell the story, the way he tells the story about the promise of America and his story, his roots, as a defender of Western civilization. And this has been something the Trump administration has done, particularly in its second term. Vance has done it.

The president has done it himself, in Europe, to the Europeans. It's really, it's a wake-up call, not only to folks here in the United States, but also to the rest of the world, this defense of Western civilization and not to be ashamed of what makes us exceptional.

Hegseth: Nidal Hasan Execution Will Be Public, "People Need To Understand That There's Serious Consequences"

Secretary of War Pete Hegeseth said in an interview with RAV's Jack Posobiec that Nidal Hasan, the Fort Hood shooter, will face a public execution.

"He's going to get a firing squad of soldiers, as it should be," Hegseth said. "We'll make sure that people are able to watch it, that it's public, because people need to understand that there's serious consequences for these types of things."

SECRETARY HEGSETH: Execution by firing squad. Army major betrays his country, radical Islamist, kills a bunch of Americans at Fort Hood. Of course, we're going to do it at Fort Hood.

We're going to do it on a Thursday. We're going to do it at one o'clock, which is when he did it. And it's going to be soldiers with rifles executing the firing squad.

It hadn't been since World War II since we've done that. Well, I kind of like the mentality we had in World War II, which was win, which was understand when the enemy attacks you, you need to stand your ground. So it was a radical Islamist terror attack.

Remember what Obama called it? Workplace violence. I mean, that's what we're up against.

That's the worldview we're up against is workplace violence, CVE. We know what it is. It was a radical Islamist attack in uniform, inside the ranks.

And so he's going to get a firing squad of soldiers, as it should be. And we'll make sure that people are able to watch it, that it's public, because people need to understand that there's serious consequences for these types of things.

Energy affordability is about more than prices at the pump or your monthly electric bill-it could shape America's economic future.

On Energy Future Now, Maggie Miller sits down with David DesRosiers to discuss how rising energy costs, growing electricity demand from AI and manufacturing, and competing political approaches to energy policy could influence our nation, and it's on the ballot in the midterm elections.

DesRosiers breaks down the choice between energy abundance and scarcity, why he believes restrictions on data centers could backfire, and what's at stake as the U.S. competes with China in the AI race.

Sen. Murphy: Hegseth Public Execution Of Nidal Hasan "One Of The Things We Abhor About Terrorist Groups"

Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT) condemns Secretary of War Pete Hegseth for announcing that the execution of Nidal Hasan, the Fort Hood shooter, will be public.

ERIN BURNETT, CNN ANCHOR: So the Pentagon today announced something, just as you are returning, that I just have to ask you about, Senator, in your role as, you know, as you said, 20 years on Capitol Hill and now on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. The defense secretary announced that the firing squad execution of the man who killed 13 people in the 2009 mass shooting at Fort Hood will be live-streamed so that everybody can watch him be killed by firing squad. I want to play what Hagseth said about his decision.

SECRETARY OF WAR PETE HEGSETH: He's going to get a firing squad of soldiers, as it should be. And we'll make sure that people are able to watch it, that it's public, because people need to understand that there's serious consequences for these types of things.

BURNETT: Senator, the execution by firing squad, just on its face, would be the first of its kind carried out by the United States Army since World War II. Obviously, live-streaming it for anybody to be able to watch it for themselves is unprecedented. Your reaction?

SEN. CHRIS MURPHY (D-CT): I actually hadn't seen that video. That's the first time that I'm learning he's going to televise it. I mean, that's disgusting. What is he, mimicking ISIS executions? I mean, I understand that in this country we have the death penalty, but public executions is medieval. It's frankly one of the things that we abhor about terrorist groups.

And the fact that the United States is doing it, I just learned this, that is just absolutely extraordinary galling. No matter whether you support or oppose the death penalty, public hangings and executions, that's what America has become. That's pretty extraordinary.

Mike Rogers: "El-Sayed Is A Conman; How Does A Doctor Have a Million Dollar Home In The UAE? Or Is It Egypt?"

Mike Rogers and Abdul El-Sayed get personal at Thursday night's Michigan Senate debate:

REP. MIKE ROGERS (R-MI): What my friend here just wants to do is-he's kind of like a glitchy AI chatbot. It's the same thing over and over and over again.

But let me tell you this. He has taken money from groups associated with and supporting the Muslim Brotherhood. He has taken money from individuals on his campaign who openly support Hamas, Hezbollah, Al-Qaeda.

He's taken money from the George Soros family. What we found out is this thing goes way back. Apparently, they paid for his education in Columbia. Now they're paying for his campaign. By the way, that's a billionaire, last I checked.

ABDUL EL-SAYED: What degree did I get at Columbia?

MODERATOR: I'm going to give you a 30-second rebuttal.

ABDUL EL-SAYED: What degree did I get at Columbia?

MIKE ROGERS: [Unclear.]

ABDUL EL-SAYED: As a doctor. I understand exactly what's happening. He likes to say the same thing. He's done the same thing over and over and over again.

You know what that is? Vote to keep your prescription drug prices high 19 times. A million dollars alone from Big Pharma, another million dollars from the health insurance corporations.

Of course he's touting their talking points. This is a guy who has not been serious about providing people health care his entire career.

What he has been serious about is making sure that he can monetize his time in public office. Fourteen million dollars, two yachts, a McMansion in Florida.

So at the end of the day, I'm a doctor. I want people to have health care.

MODERATOR: All right, so how does the-

[UNIDENTIFIED SPEAKER]: How do you move on after this?

MODERATOR: Thirty seconds.

MIKE ROGERS: Let me-how does a guy who's had less than four years of work experience, who, by the way, on the campaign trail said he had ten -- own a luxury property in the United Arab Emirates-he's worth a million bucks. Somebody has to tell me how this math works.

His facts are wrong. Those are lies. But he has consistently not told the truth. Well, let me just say it. He's lying.

So he lied about being a physician. He lied now about being an Egyptian citizen, or not Egyptian citizen. I can't figure out what he is today.

He's trying to tell you where he wants you to be. That's a con man.

MODERATOR: Congressman, we've got to stay on time.

ABDUL EL-SAYED: I just want to respond to this.

MODERATOR: You can respond directly.

ABDUL EL-SAYED: He wanted to make this about him or me, but the question is about you.
Can you afford your gas? Can you afford your groceries under this guy who's going to rubber-stamp everything Donald Trump tells him to rubber-stamp?

You're going to continue to pay way more out the nose because he works for corporations and Donald Trump.

Jon Ossoff: If John Lewis Were Marching In Selma Today, "Mike Collins Would Be Grabbing A Billy Club"

During Thursday night's Georgia Senate debate, Democrat Sen. Jon Ossoff said his GOP rival

MODERATOR: Georgia has been at the center of fights over voting rules and election administration. What voting rules should be left to Georgia to decide, and when, if ever, should the federal government step in? Senator, 60 seconds.

SEN. JON OSSOFF (D-GA): Well, look, Georgia has voter ID, and that's good.

Mike Collins and Donald Trump, they're still obsessed with overturning the 2020 election. Mike Collins still believes the 2020 election was stolen. Mike Collins has supported Donald Trump's effort to overturn the election, and he wants to give your tax dollars to the violent thugs and criminals who sacked the U.S. Capitol on January 6th.

Mike Collins is attacking your voting rights, but that's not a surprise when you consider who Mike Collins is.
This is a man who cheered on a group of young men who were mocking a Black woman on a college campus with monkey sounds.

If John Lewis were marching today from Selma to Montgomery, Mike Collins would be grabbing a billy club.
His office has been in cahoots with some of the most notorious white supremacists in the country. He himself has amplified neo-Nazi propaganda.

He's never apologized for it, and he should tonight.

MODERATOR: Congressman Collins, you have 60 seconds.

REP. MIKE COLLINS (R-GA): Yeah, you know, I'll say this: Voters need confidence. They need to know, y'all, we live in the best country in the world, and there's no reason that we shouldn't have the most secure elections in the world.

Jon Ossoff has voted against the SAVE Act numerous times.

Georgia, you're right, has a voter ID law, and we've seen historic amounts of people that have voted since that has been in place. But we need that across the country.

There's no reason that you shouldn't have to show an ID to go in and vote.

My goodness, Jon Ossoff requires you to show an ID to show up at his rally, but he doesn't think you need to do that to go vote.

People will go vote when they have confidence in our elections. Until then, it is hard, and they just want to make sure that it is a fair, equitable election out there.

El-Sayed on October 7: "I'm Not Somebody Who Tries To Make Political Theater Out Of Other People's Pain"

Democratic Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed was made to answer several questions about Israel during his first debate with GOP rival Mike Rogers on Thursday. Asked if he supports Israel or Iran, he said, "Both of them have proven dangerous in their own way."

"I don't want our tax dollars buying weapons for other countries. I don't know what's so hard about that," El-Sayed said.

When asked about condemning alleged October 7 atrocities, he said: "I'm not somebody who tries to make political theater out of other people's pain."

MODERATOR: We've got 10 seconds. Is there anything Israel could do that would lose your support?

MIKE ROGERS: Listen, if they're talking about using nuclear weapons, I would-they would definitely lose my support.

ABDUL EL-SAYED: I've never heard him say that, though.

MODERATOR: Dr. El-Sayed, you have opposed direct U.S. military funding to Israel, but if Israel were attacked tomorrow by Iran or another state actor, would you vote to provide defensive weapons necessary to protect the Israeli people? Yes or no, and you have 60 seconds to explain.

ABDUL EL-SAYED: I've been absolutely clear. I want our tax dollars spent here to provide schools here, and by here I mean Michigan, not Florida.

I want to make sure we've got good schools here and health care here. I want to make sure that we are taking care of people here. That is my priority.

You asked a hypothetical question about being attacked by Iran, but let's be honest about what happened here. Israel has pushed us to go to war in Iran, and of course my colleague, who thinks there's a war for everything, went right along with it. And here we are.

Israel had clear war aims. They wanted us to go to war with them, and their war aims were what? The annexation of southern Lebanon?

Ask yourself, are we safer because of that war?

He wants unconditional support for a foreign government. I want unconditional support for kids in our schools, unconditional support for our health care, child care, things that he would vote to defund.

So it's just inconsistent to me to be running for Senate from Michigan when you're more focused on what's happening to a foreign government than you are focused on what's happening to folks right here in Michigan. It's just not serious.

MODERATOR: If there was an attack, would you provide defensive weapons for Israel?

ABDUL EL-SAYED: I don't want our tax dollars buying weapons for other countries. I don't know what's so hard about that.

MIKE ROGERS: That's a no. I'll answer the question. Absolutely. He won't. He will not. Matter of fact, he would not even support Iron Dome. He wouldn't even support Iron Dome.

MODERATOR: We cannot do this for every question, Dr. El-Sayed.

Our next question addresses concerns from some in the Jewish community about your position on Israel.

A supporter told NewsNation's Leland Vittert at a rally that Israel is a bigger problem-or a bigger threat, I should say-to the United States than Iran.

Leland then asked you which country you consider the greater threat to the United States, and here's part of your response.

LELAND VITTERT: If you're going to be a senator, what do you view as the biggest threat?

ABDUL EL-SAYED: I've been more than extremely clear about this. I don't want our tax dollars being used to subsidize war abroad. I don't want our tax dollars being used to fund unconditionally foreign militaries.

I think it's important that we be the first among equals to enforce international law against any and every country that breaks it.

ABDUL EL-SAYED: So this sort of hypothetical, who's a bigger threat, is a dumb question. I'm sorry.

MODERATOR: Dr. El-Sayed, we didn't quite-we got the part that you thought it was dumb, but we didn't understand or kind of get to that answer.

So I'm going to ask you again tonight: Who do you think is a bigger threat to the United States, Israel or Iran? You have 60 seconds.

ABDUL EL-SAYED: And again, Rick, I'm just going to say that that's a ridiculous hypothetical, because here's what's happening right now.

Our ostensible ally in Israel has lobbied us to go to war with Iran. We have watched as Iran has responded by bombing all kinds of countries in the Middle East and then choking off the world's energy supply.

So this is a situation in which I don't think we should be a part. I don't want to be pushed into war by Israel, and I don't want to be in a war with Iran.

I want our money spent here to buy schools and health care and child care here. I don't understand why that is so inconceivable.

Now, I've got a guy to my left over here who thinks that the best use of our money is to go fight wars abroad. What has that given us?

It's part of the reason why, when he was in Congress, $12 trillion-the national debt blew up because he's never seen a war he didn't want us fighting.

So I don't consider an ally a country that takes us to wars we don't need to fight, and I don't want to be fighting wars we don't need to fight. I just think that makes both of them kind of dangerous.

MODERATOR: I'll ask one last time. Israel or Iran?

ABDUL EL-SAYED: That's again a ridiculous question. I think both of them have proven dangerous in their own way. One at risk of attacking us, one getting us into wars we have no business fighting.

MODERATOR: Congressman Rogers, Axios reported that your allies asked AIPAC not to advertise on your behalf. Axios also reported that you talked with the chair of AIPAC, and the next day they discontinued an ad on your behalf. Do you welcome AIPAC's public support, given that you do support many pro-Israeli positions? You have 60 seconds.

MIKE ROGERS: Anybody that wants to help my campaign stop a guy who can't condemn terrorism in our own country because he's so close to the people who are supporting the Muslim Brotherhood, I'll take all of that help.

And matter of fact, I think he's a little concerned about the two properties he owns. United Arab Emirates, I think the other one is Egypt, if I'm not mistaken. Can you correct me? Where's the other one?

ABDUL EL-SAYED: Yeah, no, uh-huh, yeah, that's exactly right. He owns $2.7 million in Florida, my guy.

MIKE ROGERS: Yeah, I'll talk yachts. You know what? Did you sell your yachts?

ABDUL EL-SAYED: I've never owned a yacht in Florida, brother.

MIKE ROGERS: Oh, really? What was your yacht? You had two of them.

Let me tell you this one thing. Today-or yesterday-was October 7th. This is why you should get absolutely angry.

He could not bring himself to even acknowledge the pain, the terrorism, the rape, the murders, cutting off of women's breasts, putting children in ovens and killing them in front of their families.
Could not even muster-and he could not even muster-

ABDUL EL-SAYED: Condemn that? But I didn't turn it into political theater like you just did.

MIKE ROGERS: He did not. So let me tell you this-

ABDUL EL-SAYED: I just need to-

MIKE ROGERS: No, no-

ABDUL EL-SAYED: You interrupted me for about half of my time, so I'm so sorry, but I just-I'm not somebody who tries to make political theater out of other people's pain.

MIKE ROGERS: [Unclear] pain is political theater, and you're-and you turned it into political theater.

ABDUL EL-SAYED: I'm sorry, including by putting on a white jacket.

MODERATOR: Gentlemen, shameful. Gentlemen, we're going to take a break from this pleasant conversation.

RCP Podcast: Rubio's Defense of the West, Mamdani's Bad Day, Iowa Senate Debate, "America Made Me Possible"

Thursday on the RealClearPolitics podcast, Carl Cannon, Tom Bevan, and Andrew Walworth speak with filmmaker Eli Steele about his new documentary, "White Guilt," a profile of his father, black conservative activist Shelby Steele.

Plus, Secretary of State Marco Rubio's profoundly pro-American speech yesterday at the Parthenon, NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani's unpleasant experience at yesterday's pro-Israel October 7 vigil, last night's Iowa Senate debate, and two examples of MAGA insiders under fire for breaking financial rules.

Listen live weekdays at 11:00 a.m. Eastern on SiriusXM's Megyn Kelly Channel 111, or on Apple, Spotify, YouTube, or other platforms.

00:00 - Opening: Rubio Stands Up For The West

Walworth, Cannon, and Bevan start with a review of Secretary of State Marco Rubio's soaring speech yesterday in Greece, where he proudly proclaimed the value of Western civilization from the Parthenon in Athens.

Watch: Rubio Urges Defense Of Western Civilization At Acropolis: "We Choose The Unapologetic Pursuit Of National Power"

"I love hearing Marco Rubio talk about Western civilization, how great it is, why it needs to be defended and celebrated, and we should be proud of it," Bevan said. "This is Marco Rubio's wheelhouse. This is what he does best: to be sort of a cheerleader for America and Western civilization. Given his background, his parents, Cuban, coming here with nothing, and now their son became a senator and secretary of state and maybe the president of the United States."

"This is not only mainstream Republicanism, whether you're part of the MAGA movement or the old George Bush party. Mitt Romney wouldn't disagree with that -- and if you go back 10 or 15 years, it's what half the Democrats would have said," Carl Cannon said. "It's a proudly pro-American speech. And that's what you'd expect an American secretary of state to deliver."

09:26 - Mamdani's October 7th Statement

They look at how NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani handled the third anniversary of the October 7 attack on Israel after his pointed criticism of the state of Israel.

"We're literally watching him ride the tiger right now," Tom Bevan said. "He goes to this pro-Israel vigil where apparently the protesters were about twice the size of the vigil itself, and he's standing there with a candle looking like he's about to throw up. He just looks miserable there as he's being called a traitor by all of the pro-Hamas folks."

"He tried to thread the needle here ... he tried to have it both ways, and he ends up getting criticized from both sides."

"Who are these people under these masks? A lot of them are immigrants. We hear from their accents," Carl Cannon observed. "So, no matter how critical you are of Trump-and I'm often critical of Trump-this is what he was talking about. No country has an obligation to import people into its country who hate that country."

18:25 - Eli Steele: "America Made Me Possible"

Filmmaker Eli Steele joins the program to talk about his new documentary, "White Guilt," which profiles his father, Shelby Steele, and his message to Americans: "Reject the fear of being labeled racist, embrace individual freedom, and have the courage to defend the country's founding principles."

More on his film: "White Guilt": A Documentary Essay

Steele wrote: The Terror of Being Called Racist Is Crushing Free Speech in America

Steele recounts his grandparents' interracial marriage in the 1940s and their fight against school segregation, describing their commitment to American ideals in the face of discrimination, and the personal and professional costs of his father's outspoken criticism of racial identity politics.

"My grandparents were the very first ones to shut down a segregated school north of the Mason-Dixon Line," he said.

He also comments on growing up as the son of a prominent black conservative, and how Shelby Steele rejected restrictive racial expectations and insisted on being judged as an individual.

33:03 - Iowa Senate Debate: Hinson vs. Turek

The panel turns to the debate last night in Iowa between GOP Representative Ashley Hinson and Democratic State Representative Josh Turek in this surprisingly close race for the open red-state Senate seat. Hinson's lead has fallen to less than one point in the RCP average:

Watch: 2026 Iowa Senate - Hinson vs Turek | Hinson +0.7

"According to the polls, it's like a coin flip," Tom Bevan said.

37:57 - Trump's Advisers in Bosnia

The group considers whether Trump is concerned about reports that political advisers Chris LaCivita and James Blair were paid to work for a pro-Russian political party in Bosnia.

"I think Trump himself was shocked, Andy, that these guys are over in Eastern Europe while the Republican Party is, in his mind, in this death struggle to avoid losing the Senate," Cannon said. "He seemed to be saying: Why aren't they here helping us?"

41:37 - Kimberly Guilfoyle Needs $100,000

The episode ends with a Wall Street Journal investigation alleging that U.S. Ambassador to Greece and former Donald Trump Jr. girlfriend Kimberly Guilfoyle asked for money from a Kentucky attorney in exchange for access to Trump administration officials. Guilfoyle denies the allegations. Also notable, they published this story during Marco Rubio's trip to Greece.

"It's all pretty juicy stuff, actually. And it does not paint her in the best light, even if she was desperate for money," said Bevan.

Cannon added: "Federal prosecutors have a hell of a time proving quid pro quo."

Scott Jennings: Rubio Delivered A "Remarkable And Necessary" Defense Of Western Civilization

Scott Jennings, host of "The Scott Jennings Show," reacts to Secretary of State Marco Rubio's speech defending Western Civilization at the Acropolis in Athens.

SCOTT JENNINGS: Because yesterday in Athens, Secretary of State Marco Rubio delivered a speech about the qualities that make a civilization worth preserving and the character that is required to preserve it. He spoke at the ancient meeting place of the Athenian Assembly with the Acropolis behind him, quite a setting. But the important part wasn't the scenery, as dramatic as it was, it was Marco's argument.

Western civilization has given us an extraordinary inheritance, constitutional government, scientific discovery, individual liberty, the freedom to question the people who govern us. We inherited institutions that let us argue and worship and invent, compete and replace our leaders without a civil war. And we have a responsibility to keep that inheritance alive.

Rubio's speech was a challenge to a habit that has infected too much of our public life, treating achievement as suspicious, national pride as embarrassing, and the defense of our own civilization as something requiring an apology. I think he's right. I think this speech was nothing short of remarkable and necessary. And I want to start with what he said about excellence. Cut three.

SECRETARY OF STATE MARCO RUBIO: Too often, these days, we build downwards. We design our standards to ensure that no one will lose. We preoccupy ourselves more with the comfort of the worst than the potential of the best. We hold the most exceptional things among us hostage to the average, the ordinary, the mediocre.

JENNINGS: That's a direct hit on the culture of lowering expectations. You know, we've all seen the temptation. A standard becomes difficult to meet. So somebody proposes changing the standard. A competition produces winners and losers. So somebody questions whether we should be competing at all.

A student excels. And instead of asking how to help more students reach that level, we start worrying about whether excellence makes somebody else feel bad. Here's my view. Give every child the opportunity to climb. Give them good teachers, encouragement, and help them when they struggle. But keep the mountain, because removing the challenge also removes the achievement.

Nobody benefits from being told that mediocrity is all that we should expect of them. As a father myself, I want my own children to learn that effort matters. Preparation matters.

Sometimes, rather, somebody else is better than you. But you can learn something from that. You can lose a game without losing your dignity.

You can fail at a test and learn to study harder. You can hear an argument you dislike and develop a better answer for yourself. These are essential skills for adulthood.

The world beyond the classroom will judge whether you can do the job. When you board an airplane, you want a pilot who met the standard. When you need surgery, you want a surgeon who mastered the work.

And when somebody's shooting at American soldiers, well, you want Alvin York out there on the battlefield. You want excellence. You want competence.

You want somebody who can deliver when the consequences are real. Rubio's second point gets to what we teach Americans about the country itself. Listen to this, cut four.

RUBIO: The word nationalism became a dirty word. And so we tore down our monuments. We condemned our own history. And in too many places, we taught our children to be ashamed of the countries they would inherit. In the process, we opened our borders and outsourced our industry and allowed our militaries to wither and to decay.

JENNINGS: We should teach our history honestly, of course. We can teach slavery and segregation and the broken promises and the injustices. And we can also teach about the Americans who confronted all of it.

Teach the founding promise of equality. Teach the abolitionists. Teach the soldiers who preserved the union. Teach the civil rights movement and the extraordinary courage it required. We don't have to pretend our worst moments are current because they aren't. Look how far we've come.

It's remarkable. You can give children the whole story, including our capacity to change and improve. The Declaration's promise mattered because generations of Americans insisted their country live up to it.

That's a reason for pride. An education that leaves children knowing every American failure but unable to explain why American freedom matters, well, that's a failure in and of itself. And it leaves a question hanging over everything else.

Why defend a country you've been taught to despise? Why serve it? Why sacrifice for it?

Why preserve its institutions for your own children? We need to give the next generation an answer. America gives you the freedom to criticize America, of course.

You can challenge the president, organize against the government, practice your religion, and argue that the law ought to change. Those freedoms are precious. They require courts, laws, public trust, and people willing to defend them.

Loving this country means taking responsibility for its future. Secure its borders, educate its children, maintain its defenses, make its government answer to its citizens, and build things here. Factories and power plants and ships, the technologies that will shape the next generation.

National confidence ought to produce national effort, which brings us to Rubio's warning. Cut five.

RUBIO: Today, we find ourselves at a crossroads because the next decade and the decisions we make will write the story of the next century. The course we take will determine whether the West maintains its place at the head of the world or resigns itself to a future of atrophy and servitude and decline. We will either choose to act now or lose the choice to act at all.

JENNINGS: That last point from Secretary Rubio deserves our full attention. The ability to act depends on the decisions that you make before a crisis. You need industrial capacity before you need to replace the weapons.

You need reliable energy sources before the demand arrives. You need citizens who understand freedom before somebody tries to take it away. You need allies who can help defend the peace. Our adversaries, our enemies, they're making their own plans. They pursue power and technology and resources and influence around the world. We Americans should pursue ours with confidence.

There's a practical agenda here. Reward achievement, demand competence, build strength, and teach the next generation why this country deserves their loyalty. Think again about Alvin York, a man with little schooling, deep faith, and an extraordinary skill who answered an obligation larger than himself.

Then he came home and spent some time helping to educate children. Courage in war, service and peace. America should still produce people like Alvin York, and we should raise our children to admire them. Rubio, he gave us all in the West a challenge yesterday, and I hope that we accept it.

CNN Poll: Trump's Approval Falls To 36% In Ohio, 41% In Iowa; 3 In 4 Voters Blame Trump For Higher Costs

CNN's David Chalian discusses new CNN polling showing President Donald Trump's approval rating underwater by 28 points in Ohio and 17 points in Iowa.

JOHN BERMAN, CNN: And breaking this morning, we have some brand-new CNN polls just out, and they spell deep trouble in a pair of deep red states for President Trump and his party just ahead of the midterms. In Ohio, a state the president won by 11 points in 2024, Democrat Sherrod Brown has a six-point lead in the race for the Senate against the Republican incumbent, John Husted. This would be a flip.

In Iowa, another state the president won by double digits, no clear leader between Republican Ashley Hinson and Democrat Josh Turek. But, again, the fact it's even close tells a story.

The top issue in both states is the economy. About three in four likely voters say that Trump's policies have raised the cost of living.

Want to get right to CNN's Washington Bureau Chief and Political Director, David Chalian, for the latest on this. Chief Director Chalian, great to see you this morning. Let's start with Ohio right now, what we're seeing there.

DAVID CHALIAN, CNN WASHINGTON BUREAU CHIEF: Yes, good morning, John. So again, that top line number in that Senate race, 49 percent of likely voters expressing their support for Democrat Sherrod Brown, 43 percent for Republican incumbent appointed senator, JD Vance, a six- point lead for the Democrat in Ohio.

In the governor's race, the margin's even a little bit wider. Amy Acton, the Democrat, 50 percent among likely voters, Vivek Ramaswamy, 42 percent. Look at Donald Trump's approval rating in the Buckeye State. He is down to 36 percent job approval in Ohio, a state he won three times, John, disapproval at 64 percent. That is a minus 28 percentage point underwater situation for there.

And just you noted what the 2024 presidential result was there. He beat Kamala Harris in Ohio by 11 percentage points just two years ago, John. So, you are looking at a state that we have, over our careers covering American politics, has gone from a true toss-up battleground state to a pretty red state, and we see it swinging back this cycle a bit.

BERMAN: Obama won it twice. Trump won it three times. You can see the swings back and forth there. David, let's go to the other four-letter state here. Let's talk about Iowa.

CHALIAN: Yes, the other four-letter state, also a deep red state. And take a look here. Here, we have no clear leader. This is a margin of error race in a really red Republican state. Ashley Hinson, the Republican seeking to replace Joni Ernst in the Senate, at 45 percent support among likely voters, Josh Turek at 43 percent support. Different story here in the governor's race. Big lead for the Democrat Rob Sand. He's at 51 percent in our poll compared to 42 percent for Zach Lane. But, again, Trump's approval rating is underwater.

Now, not as deeply underwater as in Ohio, John. I think these two red states are behaving a little bit differently. 41 percent approval, still not good for Trump in what should be a friendly state, 17 points underwater on his approval. And it is a bit of a redder state. I mean, he won it by 13 points in 2024 against Kamala Harris.

John, I do want to underscore something you said at the top. The economy and the cost of living in both of these states is far and away the number one issue. That is what this election is about. And to the point you made, this number here, the, at the top line, this jumps out at me like no other number in our polls.

Donald Trump's policies have increased costs, say, three-quarters, 76 percent of likely voters in Ohio and 74 percent, three-quarters of likely voters in Iowa. That is a huge majority of people who are tying their higher costs to Donald Trump's policies.

That is what this 2026 midterm seems to be about.

BERMAN: In 2024, he said he was going to lower costs. Three-quarters of people say his policies have caused them to go up.

David Chalian, with all the breaking poll news this morning, thanks so much for being with us. I appreciate it. Kate?

VICE PRESIDENT JD VANCE: How do you define socialism personally and why do you think socialist candidates are popping up everywhere across the country? Oh man, you know, I guess it's honestly it's a hard term to define these days because very often socialism, you know, classically you would think socialism is about prioritizing workers and yet in reality I guarantee that most of the self-described socialists running across the United States of America are going to howl about this announcement today which is prioritizing American workers over foreign workers.

So I don't know what the term means anymore. I think in reality what it actually means in the American context is that you want to replace American workers with foreign workers and you want boys to play in girls sports. That's what unites the socialists that I see running across the United States of America today.

You know, it's funny. Back in 2016, one of the most interesting things that happened is when Bernie Sanders, then of course the leading socialist in the United States of America, was asked about open borders. He gave an answer that sounded similar to Stephen Miller's where he said, of course we're not going to have open borders because that's going to displace American workers.

It is ironic that so many of the self-described socialists running across this country, they love the idea of replacing American workers with foreign workers, which suggests to me it's really not about the working class. It's about their hatred of native-born citizens. I saw real clear over here.

Schweizer: "Foreign Money in Campaigns? They Don't Care."

Money in politics is troublesome enough, but when it knowingly comes from foreign sources, it's also illegal. That is the problem for ActBlue, the official fundraising platform for Democratic Party candidates that has been under investigation for doing exactly that. It just got worse.

This week, ActBlue's lawyers told the House of Representatives this week the platform will now actively verify US passport numbers that are input by online donors as part of its "ongoing investment in the security of contributions processed from donors located abroad," Fox News reported. Unfortunately, that is an admission ActBlue has not done so for years.

The news startles Eric Eggers, co-host of The Drill Down podcast: Imagine if your employee came to you and said, 'Hey boss, good news! I quit drinking whiskey at lunch,' Eggers says. You'd say, 'That's great, but does that mean you've been drinking whiskey at lunch for the last several years?'

Host Peter Schweizer quips, That could also mean they've switched to vodka!

Republicans on the oversight committee have for years accused ActBlue of having insufficient verification standards for weeding out illegitimate campaign donations. Under US election law, foreigners may not contribute to US political campaigns.

ActBlue collected billions of dollars for Democratic candidates without doing rudimentary safety checks that ensure online donations come only from valid US givers. For years, ActBlue did not even check for a valid CVV number, a basic security measure followed by all online merchants. Several senior ActBlue officials resigned and its CEO, Regina Wallace-Jones, Schweizer noted in a media appearance at the time, took the Fifth Amendment 22 times when she was called to answer questions.

None of this surprises Schweizer, president of the Government Accountability Institute (GAI) and bestselling author of several books on foreign interference in American politics. At GAI, we've been on this for more than a decade, Schweizer says. GAI did an investigative report in 2017 that found the percentage of Congressional Republicans with active donation pages requiring CVV verification was 91.3 percent in 2016. On the other hand, CVV usage by Democrat members of Congress with active donation pages in that election year was just 8.3 percent.

Schweizer notes the new interim joint report from the Oversight, Judiciary, and House Administration committees highlighted internal ActBlue email threads. ActBlue repeatedly instructed its fraud prevention analysts to give the donor the benefit of the doubt and to ignore red flags about contributions with foreign indicators. In addition, ActBlue previously did have a passport number textbox on its online donation form, the committee found, but all it did was count that the input contained the correct number of digits.

In one email thread, an analyst rejected a donation with several 'red flags,' Schweizer notes on the show. The supervisor reviews it and says, 'I disagree with this reject. You are right that their IP [internet address] and billing are mismatched and a Romanian IP definitely raises some questions, but you wrote in the case comment that their name on their X profile is different, but when I click it, it looks like the same name.'

This is a problem for a lot of political campaigns. The Associated Press did an investigation last year and found that the Trump campaign over the past five years had 1,600 contributions from donors who lived abroad, had close ties to foreign interests, or failed to disclose basic information, making it difficult -- if not impossible -- to identify them and verify the legality of their donations, Schweizer notes. Mayor Mamdani, the mayor of New York City, has a lot of support in the Muslim community. National News Desk reported that in his 2025 campaign, he received $13,000 in donations from 170 foreign donors. Those are just the ones that were detected.

This shows that political campaigns ignore where money comes from, Schweizer says. Cash is cash as far as they're concerned.

The hosts close the show on a key question: Is foreign money a major problem in American elections?

At GAI, our researchers spend a lot of time reading foreign language press reports, Schweizer explains. What you see when you spend time reading that material is that [foreign governments] are watching the politics in the US very closely… They want one side to win; they want another side not to win.

One of the members of the royal family of Qatar put up on her social media accounts how people can donate to Mamdani, he adds.

It matters more now than it did before, Eggers says.

Full Press Conference: Vance Announces Crackdown on Big Tech, Universities, IT Firms Over Alleged Foreign Work Visa Fraud

Vice President Vance announced Thursday that the federal government is suspending some of the largest IT outsourcing firms and Big Tech companies, including Microsoft and Adobe, from the application process for H!-B foreign worker residency visas.

"Thanks to an ongoing investigation, we have decided to suspend the PERM program for Microsoft, which means they will no longer be able to take those H-1Bs and apply for permanent resident status within the United States of America. Now our message to Microsoft and to any other foreign or domestic corporation is quite simple. We obviously want you to thrive in the United States of America. We want people to invest in the United States of America, particularly the American technology sector. We're the biggest boosters of your industry. We want you to continue to grow and to employ a lot of people, but we want you to employ American workers. And so our message to Microsoft is, you're great American company, but you've got to hire great American workers. You cannot lay off American workers and then replace them with foreign indentured servants."

"You bring in indentured servants from outside the country, you lay off American workers, and if you're a corporation, you make a ton of money by undercutting the wages of American workers, replacing them with people who, frankly, shouldn't be in the United States of America to begin with," he said.

"If you are working as an H-1B visa in the United States of America, you're earning $20,000 less than an American citizen hired in the same position. If you were brought in by one of these foreign outsourcing firms, you're making $48,000 less than an American citizen in a similar position," Vance said. "So I'm sure that everybody here understands the game that is being played. You bring in indentured servants from outside the country, you lay off American workers and, if you're a corporation, you make a ton of money by under cutting the wages of American workers, replacing them with people who frankly shouldn't be in the United States of America to begin with."

They also announced that nine major universities -- Harvard, Yale, Stanford, Brown, the University of Pittsburgh, UC Davis, Caltech, Arizona State, and MIT -- are being suspendig from a student work visa program, pending investigations.

"These universities are employing J1 visas for federally funded grants at a rate of about 61%. The national average is 38%. So something weird is going on at these universities," Vance said.

Vance Explains Big Tech Visa Crackdown: Replacing American Workers With "Foreign Indentured Servants" Is Fraud

RCP's Carolina Lumetta asked Vice President Vance during a press conference Thursday announcing a crackdown on alleged abuse and fraud in work visa programs to explain exactly what fraud they are targeting.

The administration announced this morning that it is suspending six of the largest IT outsourcing consultants and several major technology companies, including Microsoft and Adobe, from participating in the Permanent Labor Certification (PERM) program, blocking them from sponsoring foreign workers for employment-based green cards.

The PERM program requires employers to prove there are no qualified Americans available to take the position before sponsoring green cards for foreign workers.

"The fraud is that they are making representations while applying for this program that are fundamentally illegitimate and therefore ultimately illegal," Vance said.

"When you apply for these visa programs, you make a couple of certifications," Vance said. "One of the certifications is that the person you're bringing in has a hyper-specialized, hyper-capable skill set. That is clearly not the case if you're just replacing one American worker with a foreign indentured servant and undercutting their wages in the process."

"Our message to Microsoft is: You're a great American company, but you've got to hire great American workers," Vance said at the beginning of the press conference.

He explained the details at the beginning of the event:

Vice President JD Vance announces the suspension of the PERM Program for Microsoft:

VICE PRESIDENT JD VANCE: I saw RealClear over here!

CAROLINA LUMETTA: Can you clarify what exactly the fraud element of this is? What is the scale of it? You mentioned Microsoft with the 6,300 [visas]? Were they lying on those applications? Was there some kind of law they were breaking? Or was this a legal pathway to the system and you are taking an objection to that?

VANCE: I don't think it was a legal pathway through the system. The nature of the fraud is fundamentally, when you apply for these visa programs, you make a couple of certifications. One of the certifications is that the person you're bringing in has a hyper-specialized, hyper-capable skill set.
Will Cain: We Condemn Ourselves And Our History Through "Cultural Denial" And The "Institutional Canceling" Of America

FOX News host Will Cain's October 7th opening monologue on history, Western civilization, and the attacks on them:

WILL CAIN, FOX NEWS ANCHOR: Good afternoon and live from Texas via New York City, this is "The Will Cain Show," where we begin with a FOX News Alert.

Terror attack thwarted, the FBI arresting suspected ISIS sympathizer in a terror plot, targeting the Mall of America in Minnesota. The 18-year-old suspect, Sheikhdoon Abdullahi Mohamud, had been under investigation for nearly two years. He's been trading messages with a confidential informant before he was arrested yesterday.

That's when he paid $600 to an undercover FBI employee posing as a member of ISIS. He paid that in exchange for an AK-47 and 200 rounds of ammunition. Now, the criminal complaint stating the suspect repeatedly affirmed his intent to kill non-Muslims.

In his text message with the FBI source, he confirmed those details. Now, it's a relief to say the least to have this story in the way it did, but it's also a reminder that we can't let our guard down to threats of any kind. But let this also serve as a reminder that this is not just a threat to lives, but to civilization.

That message was one that Secretary of State Marco Rubio delivered earlier today in Greece.

MARCO RUBIO, U.S. SECRETARY OF STATE: Today, we find ourselves at a crossroads, because the next decade and the decisions we make will write the story of the next century. The course we take will determine whether the West maintains its place at the head of the world, or resigns itself to a future of atrophy and servitude and decline.

We will either choose to act now or lose the choice to act.

CAIN: Maintaining dominance or a future of servitude and decline, stark, heck of a choice.

And it's a choice that too many have obviously already made, choosing self- hatred.

RUBIO: Over time, we in the West came to feel ashamed of the very things that made us exceptional. We felt embarrassed that our achievements set us apart from the rest of the world. Our prosperity somehow became a source of guilt. The word nationalism became a dirty word.

And so we tore down our monuments, we condemned our own history, we condemned our own history, and in too many places we taught our children to be ashamed of the countries they would inherit. In the process, we opened our borders and outsourced our industry and allowed our militaries to wither and to decay.

CAIN: There might be no better example of what he's talking about than the scenes playing out on the streets of France, revolt under the guise of student protests.

These don't look like students. You don't exercise reverence or ask for new textbooks by disrespecting your history, disrespecting your culture, destroying your cities. But it's also part of the same thing we're seeing here at home.

And Rubio is right. Part of the prelude to where we are, as he mentioned, open borders, mass migration, cultural denial, and then destruction. And he's also right to highlight that, in many places in the U.S., the call is coming from inside the house.

We showed you yesterday from the soapbox of Bernie Sanders.

SEN. BERNIE SANDERS (I-VT): What we have got to do is move this country as soon as possible to comprehensive immigration reform and a path to citizenship.

CAIN: Illegal immigrants turned citizens. To quote Rubio once again, nationalism has become a dirty word, and so it's condemned. And in the process, we condemn ourselves and our own history.

So where does that lead us? Well, cancel culture, wokeness, but colleges, politicians, the institutional canceling of America.

CHRIS ROCK, COMEDIAN: The problem with wokeness is, we're in the Old Testament right now, OK? And the Old Testament has no forgiveness. The Old Testament didn't work, so they had to write a remix called the New Testament. It's great to help those that need help. That is an amazing -- we need more of that.

The problem is when you institutionalize it. Salem witch-hunts, I'm sure the first three witches they caught were actually (EXPLETIVE DELETED) witches. But then you open up a witch office, and now you got to start lying.

CAIN: So we institutionalize destruction. We leave chaos. And what's left when you destroy? A void. It's empty. It's a blank slate. And it's a blankness that we can see on the faces of our children.

LL COOL J, ACTOR AND MUSICIAN: The Internet is like a script, right?

JOE ROGAN, HOST, "THE JOE ROGAN EXPERIENCE": Yes.

LL COOL J: But real life is on its feet. And with kids a lot of times, not all, because a lot of -- there are a lot of animals out there that want it, but a lot of them, they want real life to work like the Internet, instant validation. Everybody loves me, instant this, instant that.

ROGAN: Yes.

LL COOL J: The Internet will reward you for chopping down trees in the wrong forest.

ROGAN: Yes. Yes. Yes.

LL COOL J: But in real life, you got to put your ladder against the right wall, right?

CAIN: Down trees in the wrong floors. Such a thing can be done with a blank face, because, from that void, the worst can become and build suggestible people into what? Into anything.

Thankfully, though, this fight is not surrendered. This fight is also not new. And we have been here before. That means we can and know how to still win.

RUBIO: The threats we face today are every bit as real as they were on the dramatic stage of antiquity. We must rebuild our institutions and our alliances to face these threats together, understanding that the purpose of these things is not to abolish the sovereignty of the nations that constitute them. It is to defend them, and that nations need not abandon their distinct identities in order to recognize their common interests.

Jon Stewart Belittles Impeachment: I Don't Want To See A Performative Play That Doesn't Hold Trump Accountable

Host Jon Stewart talked about the strategy for Democrats if they take control of both House and Senate in 2026:

CO-HOST: John, if the Democrats win the House and the Senate, what, fingers crossed, should they try to impeach Trump or would that be a strategic mistake since he won't be convicted?

JON STEWART: What, what is any of that? We've already shown there's no accountability when they're, what I want to see is a full government effort on rebalancing this economy. And this is about triage and the corruption of that family.

F*cking let them drain us. Like they think they're going to drain us, wall it off. So it doesn't infect the rest of the economy and spend a total government effort at rebalancing labor versus capital with real ideas about like the ones that Catherine was saying, that's where all their efforts should be.

I don't want to see a f*cking five-act performative play of House hearings. I just don't want to see it. I don't want to see everybody having the opportunity to pantomime accountability because you know, they're actually not going to bring it.

You want to do some investigations to some sh*t. That's great. But on the triage list of what's wrong in this country, it is, I'm sorry, sir, you're going to have to stay in the waiting room because this guy just got shot. And it sounds to me like you just have a sore throat, like do the sh*t that actually is killing people right now. That's all too much. Was that too?

CO-HOST: No, no, I think just the right level. Yes.

STEWART: Like that's, we've been in those hearings. If you couldn't bring accountability to January 6th in two years, what confidence do any of us have that you're going to be able to untangle Eric and Don's drone company?

CO-HOST: Truly. I do want them to be a little scared though. That's it.

STEWART: Scared of what? What are they scared of? There is not a person of that power and privilege that can't figure out how to run out the clock on a two year investigation. So accomplish mom, Donny it, which pothole you need filled, f*cking fill it.

Govern. You want to do some things that are ancillary, a little side project. You want to do the investigations as a hobby. Knock yourself out. Fix sh*t.

Megyn Kelly: Cornell Defendants "Fit Squarely Within Tish James's Identity Politics"

SiriusXM host Megyn Kelly is joined by Rich Lowry and Charles C.W. Cooke of National Review to discuss the 'Cornell 7' case:

MEGYN KELLY: And now twist in the story, I mean, real twist actually. Matt Ingles appears, according to reporting online, forgive me, because there was somebody who broke it online who did a good job of tracking down who he really is, and then the Daily Mail advanced it. He is not originally named Matt... and he's from the UAE. His name is Umar, and he is from the UAE. So Matt Ingles appears to be Muslim from the UAE, where the Daily Mail reports he has returned to Dubai in the wake of all of this. Who could blame him? I looked it up to see if they have an extradition treaty with the United States, and they don't. They don't. So Matt Ingles is out of here. He got expelled from Cornell along with Newell, and Jane Doe proceeds forward, but now the reason it's a real twist, is not just because we're throwing Muslims into the mix for no reason, but the four men who had sex with Jane Doe, according to Jane Doe, against her will. Now it's not what she was always saying, are a Muslim, a black kid, an Asian, and someone from, I believe… Portuguese. So you got four guys who fit squarely within Tish James's identity politics, which will elevate them in the world of Tish James over a white young woman from the deep South who uses terms like "y'all" regularly, and I do think it's interesting. I do actually think this could tip the balance in the minds of somebody like Tish James. That John Newell is clearly black or mixed race. He has an afro, and now the other main perpetrator is Muslim. This is getting very interesting.

Tillis on Confirming Hegseth: "I Made A Mistake, But Based On The Data I Had At The Time, I'd Do The Same Thing Again"

Senator Thom Tillis (R-NC) on his support for some of President Trump's cabinet nominees:

KASIE HUNT, CNN: You criticize the president's, a number of the president's cabinet members, you refer to them as maggots in your book. You've also called President Trump a very strong political athlete, can't argue with that, he's won two presidential elections, but you voted for a lot of these nominees and when you look back on the time you've been here in a Washington that has been dominated by President Trump, where and how do you think, if at all, you've enabled his worst instincts?

SEN. THOM TILLIS (R-NC): Well, I do think that in the case of confirming Hegseth, I'm partly responsible for some of the challenges that we're having now with getting funding and succeeding in Iran because I think Hegseth has failed. But you know, I think it's funny, I've talked to some people, I said it was my biggest regret, they're gonna, well, we need to do a way back, way back sort of machine and you can reverse your decision. That's, that's in the past.

What I can say is I made a mistake, but based on the data I had at the time, I'd do the same thing again. Knowing what I know now, I would have never gotten him, but of course he wouldn't have gotten a unanimous vote out of the committee if we'd known he wasn't going to consult with Congress. He takes us for granted and he treats us more like a manufacturing line in his company than his board of directors, which is going to create some problems for him when he tries to get one and a half trillion dollars in defense spending because he simply hasn't, he needs to to get their support.

Rep. Raskin: We Need A Trump Exhibit In The Smithsonian To Teach Future Generations, "So We Never Forget About It"

Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) talks to CNN's Kasie Hunt about his bill that would direct the Smithsonian to preserve Trump-era banners and other materials he describes as "propaganda" as historical artifacts.

KASIE HUNT, CNN HOST: all the changes that he's made here in Washington and the ones that are still underway, you've actually introduced a new bill that would direct the Smithsonian to preserve what you describe as, quote, Trump propaganda, things like the banners that are bearing his face that are on the Labor Department, the Department of Justice, all these buildings here in Washington. Why do you want the Smithsonian to preserve that stuff?

REP. JAMIE RASKIN (D-MD): Well, we're going to get through this nightmare and we want to record it the way that historians and archivists do. You know, Trump and all of his loyal sycophants are busily trying to destroy the real history of the country. That's why the Smithsonian is under attack and the Museum of American History is under attack.

You know, they don't like the fact that people learn about slavery and the role that it played in our civil war. They don't like people learning about the civil rights movement, the great civilizing struggles of American history, and they're trying to suppress it. And so I want to reverse that and say we're not going to suppress the history of Donald Trump and authoritarianism in America.

We're going to teach it and we're going to turn those things into exhibits, you know, those Stalinist banners that he's draping over, you know, the Labor Department and the Justice Department. Let's take those and let's turn them into a museum exhibit, along with other memorabilia of this wretched period of our history where he tore down so much of what really unifies us as a country and tried to replace it with all of his, you know, narcissistic, self-loving presentations. So let's show that to people and let's teach that to future generations so we never forget about it.

Enten On Decline Of Trump Base: "These Are The Types Of Numbers On Which Democratic Waves Are Built"

CNN data analyst Harry Enten breaks down polling showing Democrats making gains among 2024 Trump voters in key Senate and House races.

JOHN BERMAN, CNN ANCHOR: Twenty-seven days to go until the midterm elections. And as we've been reporting this morning, some Republican insiders are starting to tell our reporters they are worried about the possibility of a bloodbath in the midterms. Major losses. And one of the problems seems to be that the calls, as it were, the calls for concern are coming from within the building. What do I mean?

CNN chief data analyst Harry Enten is here.

Problems on the home front for the president.

HARRY ENTEN, CNN CHIEF DATA ANALYST: Absolutely right. Johnny B. talks about that bloodbath. And that is because Democrats across the board are coming in and going into the Trump den like a lion and taking a bite out of the support from Trump supporters among Republicans.

Take a look here. The median margin in the key 2026 Senate races. Look at this. Among 2024 Harris voters, Democrats pretty much are holding on to the Harris supporters. Look at this, up by 92 points among them, right? Harris won these voters by 100.

But look at this. Look at this among 2024 Trump voters. They are only supporting Republican candidates by 79 points. So, that's a 13 point difference here. And more than that, of course, remember, these 2024 Trump voters, they went for Donald Trump by 100. So, we're talking about a 21 point decline. These are the types of numbers that allow Democrats to go into these red states. Remember, the key Senate states are overwhelmingly Republican. And this is allowing them to actually win in these states, or at least lead in these states right now, because they are getting such a large chunk of the Trump base.

BERMAN: It's a one for one shift here.

ENTEN: Right.

BERMAN: When you're leaving from a Trump base, from a Republican, and going to a Democrat, you can see what the problem is there. That's the key senate races. What about in the House?

ENTEN: Yes, OK, Johnny B., so these are the Senate races, right? Same situations going on nationally, although to a little bit lesser of an extent.

Take a look here. OK. The margin in the national House polling.

Among the 2024 Harris voters, look at that, Democrats ahead by 91 points. They're basically -- all the people who voted for Harris are basically saying they are going to vote for a Democratic nominee for the House.

Take a look here. Among the Trump voters, it's the same phenomenon there. They're, simply put, not holding on to the Trump base at this point. Remember, again, Trump won these voters by 100 points. Now we're seeing a 16-point decline here and a seven point difference here. These are the types of numbers on which Democratic waves are built. These are the types of numbers that lead to bloodbaths. That's why I said, it's like a lion going into the Trump den and taking a real bite out of it, because these are the types of numbers that allow Democrats to do so well if the Republicans did well in 2024.

BERMAN: Again, we're talking about Trump voters.

ENTEN: Correct.

BERMAN: A hundred percent of which voted for Donald Trump in 2024.

ENTEN: Correct.

BERMAN: What are they saying about one of the big issues in this election?

ENTEN: Yes, that's exactly right. Remember, these are 100 percent Trump's. They voted for Trump by 100, and now they're only voting by 84. That's a big decline. And what is driving it? What is driving this decline?

Well, Ken Paxton kind of had it right. You know, look at -- look at these numbers. OK, this is on gas prices. This is among 2024 Trump voters. Remember 100 percent of these folks voted for Donald Trump. But in the key Senate state average, look at this, the net approval rating for Trump, the best he can do is one point. That is just one point more of Trump voters approve than disapprove of him on gas prices. One hundred percent of these voters went for Donald Trump. And nationwide, look at this, among the Trump voters, he's actually underwater. He's underwater. The line is dragging the Trump voters underwater and taking them away from the Republican Party.

BERMAN: Pretty impressive there. An impressive shift.

Harry, I know you know a lot about elections, but say you wanted to learn more tonight at 7 p.m. Where would you tune in? ENTEN: You know, sometimes I wonder, Johnny B., how could I possibly,

possibly learn more than just watching YouTube videos all night long? But Johnny B. has the answer. Johnny B. has the answer. Look at this. We've got interactive Q&A behind the scenes of a campaign tonight, 7 p.m., streaming live, cnn.com/officehours.

Johnny B., tell us about our wonderful guest.

BERMAN: Alyssa Farah Griffin, communications director under President Trump in the first term, and Chuck Rocha, who is helping the campaign of James Talarico, the Democrat in Texas, among others. I'm sure you'll have a lot of questions for both of them about what it's like to be inside the campaign. Cnn.com/officehours.

ENTEN: Oh, I like this scene. This is really nice.

BERMAN: What do you say? This is swinging, right, Kate?

KATE BOLDUAN, CNN ANCHOR: Oh, my god. But literally this could -- this is like the song that is in Harry Enten's mind at all times is what I actually envision, right?

BERMAN: It's scary.

ENTEN: It drives my life, Kate. It drives my life.

Kite & Key Media: Are Data Centers Wasting Water and Raising Electric Bills?

Are data centers draining our water and jacking up our electric bills? That's the fear behind the nationwide backlash. But the numbers tell a much calmer story … at least for now.

America has been building data centers since the late 1950s. They're the internet's engine room: AI runs on them, but so do video calls, online gaming, and the text you probably shouldn't send your ex. What's new is the backlash, driven mostly by fears about water and electricity.

On water, the comparisons are revealing. A typical data center uses a little less water in a day than a typical golf course. And one viral statistic that stoked a lot of the alarm turned out to be off … by a factor of 4,500.

On electricity, data centers are big users, but so are plenty of other industries. And the research so far suggests they haven't been driving up household power bills. If anything, the opposite.

The real risk is that demand outruns our ability to build the power supply to serve it. And with Americans using more data every year, that's a problem worth taking seriously.

Open to Debate: Should We Phase Out Social Security?

For decades, Social Security has been a cornerstone of American retirement, but the program was designed for a different population and economy. Today, Americans are living longer, but there are fewer workers supporting each beneficiary. Social Security itself is already paying out more than it takes in, while the roughly $40.12 trillion national debt raises questions about how much room the government has to address the shortfall. The 2026 Social Security Trustees project that the retirement trust fund will exhaust its reserves in 2032, after which incoming revenue would cover only 78 percent of scheduled benefits unless Congress acts.

Those who favor phasing it out argue that a system designed in the 1930s is ill-suited to today's economy. Rather than providing benefits regardless of wealth or income, Social Security could become a means-tested safety net for those who need it most, while other Americans rely more on personal savings and investments for retirement.

Opponents argue Social Security provides something private accounts cannot: guaranteed, inflation-adjusted income for life, along with disability and survivor benefits, and remains a powerful anti-poverty tool. Rather than dismantling a critical safeguard, they say Congress should strengthen its finances through some combination of higher revenues and changes to benefits.

As the clock ticks toward its projected shortfall, we debate the question: Should We Phase Out Social Security?

Trump: When The Democrats Get In, "Everything Becomes Dirty And Has A Bad Smell"

President Donald Trump, at a rally in San Antonio for Texas Republican Senate nominee Ken Paxton, called Democratic cities dirty.

PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP: For decades, Texas has been the state where people flee to escape the economic oppression and social collapse of Democrat-run California, New York, Illinois, and other failing blue states. But if Talifrico and the Democrats get their way, all of that squalor, misery, poverty, homelessness - you know, I said it the other day. When the blues get in, everything becomes dirty.

The streets are dirty. The doorknobs going into stores are dirty. The sidewalks are filthy dirty. Everything becomes dirty and has a bad smell. But we're going to escape all that lawlessness, corruption, dysfunction that's coming to destroy your beloved state of Texas if this guy ever got in. And remember this.

Proud, long-ago patriots of the Lone Star State, we'll never forgive you for what you have done if you let that happen. We got to get - we got to get the best guy. He'll be one of the best - I'll tell you what.

He'll be one of the best senators that we have in this country. You watch. I know my people.

I know my people. And I just made enemies of about 53 senators, but that's okay.

"This was Israel's 9/11," Bevan said. "It tells you that the Democratic Party has not just done sort of a wink and a nod to some of these folks on the left, but they're actually now ingesting this policy position."

"I think the Democrats have become an unreliable ally of Israel and American Jews," Porter said.

Rubio Urges Defense Of Western Civilization At Acropolis: "We Choose The Unapologetic Pursuit Of National Power"

During a trip to Greece today, Secretary of State Marco Rubio issued a call for Europe to help "defend Western civilization" in a speech from the Acropolis in Athens

"Many people are surprised to learn that the most commonly cited author in the Federalist Papers was not an Enlightenment philosopher or political theorist. The most commonly cited author in the Federalist Papers was Plutarch," Rubio said. "Athens gave us democracy. Plato and Aristotle gave us Western philosophy. Our ideas of law, of virtue, of citizenship and republic and government were shaped in the Greek city-states."

"Even much of our political vocabulary, words like democracy, tyranny, the word politics itself, found its origins here," he said. "Now, all of that is true, but the things we owe to this place as Americans and as Westerners are actually far, far deeper."

"The Greeks did not just shape history. The Greeks gave us history itself."

"It is not just the ambition to explore the unknown that we inherit from the Greeks. It is the conviction that the unknown can be known," he said. "The confidence that the world can be charted and measured and mapped and understood, and that there is a rational order to the cosmos governed by certain fundamental laws, laws that men can observe and the mind can come to understand. This was the foundation of the Western mind."

"The classical Greek city was an arena for great men to test and prove themselves, to hone their potential through perpetual struggle, to be the best, the strongest, the most beautiful, straining to inch ever closer to perfection," he said.

"Now, I know that to modern ears, what I just described, this way of life, may sound odd. It may even sound cruel," Rubio said. "The ideal of many ideologies in our time has frankly become a world of perfect safety, a world devoid of risk or failure, where neither the glory of victory nor the shame of defeat."

"Too often these days, we build downwards. We design our standards to ensure that no one will lose. We preoccupy ourselves more with the comfort of the worst than the potential of the best. We hold the most exceptional things among us hostage to the average, the ordinary, the mediocre. The men who made the Parthenon built upwards. They held that the highest and most noble aspiration in life was to surpass all others, to strive to be the best in all things."

"The thumos, as the ancient Greeks called it, the fire of passion, strength, courage, pride, is the heart of great civilization. And without it, without it, nations lose their will to fight, the will to strive, the will to survive. Today, too much of the West has forgotten this quality."

"Over time, we in the West came to feel ashamed of the very things that made us exceptional. We felt embarrassed that our achievements set us apart from the rest of the world. Our prosperity somehow became a source of guilt. We no longer believed we deserved and had earned our greatness,"

"With every passing year, we seemed to outsource more of our sovereignty, transferring our decisions to global bureaucracies far beyond the reach of our control," he said. "But others were all too happy to fill the vacuum that we left... And now today, we find ourselves at a crossroads because the next decade and the decisions we make will write the story of the next century."

"The course we take will determine whether the West maintains its place at the head of the world or resigns itself to a future of atrophy and servitude and decline."

"We will either choose to act now or lose the choice to act at all," Rubio said. "Under President Trump, the United States has made its choice. We choose the unapologetic pursuit of national power, to take back control of our critical supply chains, to reindustrialize our economy, to rebuild our defense, to fight for dominance of the technologies and industries of the future."

To Europe, he said: "We do not believe the transatlantic friendship should be zero-sum. Quite the opposite. Our vision is an alliance whose strength is greater than the sum of its parts."

The Legacy of Greece and the Acropolis

SECRETARY OF STATE MARCO RUBIO: There are great ruins all across the world. In many cases, they are places where history seems to have exhausted itself, remnants of distant cultures that have long passed beyond living memory. But the Acropolis is different.

For thousands of years, the civilization that built what stands behind me has captivated the imagination of the Western world. Generations of our statesmen, artists, and philosophers have looked to it with wonder, and they look to it with awe.

Now, time has a tendency to dull the senses. Great victories and catastrophic defeats, they seem to shrink to becoming like a footnote in a textbook, another fact for our schoolchildren to memorize and forget. But the Greeks of antiquity, they seem to have an almost mystical hold on our memory. They call us back to them again and again.

...

For 25 centuries since, the Parthenon has stood. Empires have risen and fallen beneath its shadow, and the progeny of the men who built it, the sons of Athens and Rome, have carried their civilization with them to the ends of the earth.

Two and a half centuries after the founding of the American Republic, halfway across the world from where I stand now, I stand here today as the secretary of state of that republic and as the great-grandson of settlers who arrived in the New World from Spain.

I stand here to testify to a debt that no lapse of time, no distance of space can ever extinguish.

The history of America, the history of my country, is covered with the fingerprints of antiquity. Greece is literally carved into the architecture of our government, in the towering columns, in the domes, and the monuments across our capital city. The city where our Constitution was born, Philadelphia, is itself a Greek name.

The men who founded my country were fascinated by the heritage we inherited from yours. They were exceptionally well-read in history. They were vividly aware of their unique place in it. But no other age of the past held their attention or their imagination quite like that of antiquity.

Many people are surprised to learn that the most commonly cited author in the Federalist Papers was not an Enlightenment philosopher or political theorist. The most commonly cited author in the Federalist Papers was Plutarch, the Greek biographer of Greece and Rome's great men.

Now, much has been written and said about the influence of ancient Greece on the ideas of the American founders and, for that matter, on all of the Western philosophers and statesmen that preceded them. Most of us are familiar with the basic history. Athens gave us democracy. Plato and Aristotle gave us Western philosophy. Our ideas of law, of virtue, of citizenship and republic and government were shaped in the Greek city-states.

Even much of our political vocabulary, words like democracy, tyranny, the word politics itself, found its origins here. Now, all of that is true, but the things we owe to this place as Americans and as Westerners are actually far, far deeper.

...

To know them is to know ourselves.

What blossomed here in this place was the Western desire to uncover all that ignorance, darkness, and distance had kept hidden from the mind of man.

The Greeks did not just shape history. The Greeks gave us history itself.

Much of what we know about many ancient civilizations comes almost entirely from the records of Greek explorers and historians, explorers and historians who didn't just chronicle the histories of their own people, but ventured outward to observe and record the sagas of foreign peoples and cultures all across the world.

Where others looked inward, the Greeks were the first to direct their focus outward, to chase the thrill and glory of seeing all that was strange and new.

It was this trait that would push the West to create and build things that others could not, marking us out from so many other cultures and civilizations where stability and subsistence were the highest ends of life.

But it is not just the ambition to explore the unknown that we inherit from the Greeks. It is the conviction that the unknown can be known.

The confidence that the world can be charted and measured and mapped and understood, and that there is a rational order to the cosmos governed by certain fundamental laws, laws that men can observe and the mind can come to understand.

...

This was the foundation of the Western mind, our math, our science, our medicine, our philosophy, ethics, and religion. It paved the way for the Gospel of Jesus Christ to find fertile soil in Europe and flourish into the empire of Christendom.

It was the foundation of the riches of Christian theology, of Augustine and Aquinas and the whole tradition of natural law.

It gave birth to a civilization marked not just by a common culture, but marked by a common anthropology, a common view of man and of his place in the universe.

Its descendants would share not just the idea of a natural order, but a distinctive understanding of virtue, of destiny, of fate, of truth, goodness, and beauty, of a code that dictates how men ought to live, of objective standards and ideals to strive toward.

For the Greeks of antiquity, the pursuit of excellence was the very principle of man's existence.

They organized all of civic life around contest and ambition and competition, in philosophy and poetry and sculpture and drama, in athletics and art, in war and statecraft.

The classical Greek city was an arena for great men to test and prove themselves, to hone their potential through perpetual struggle, to be the best, the strongest, the most beautiful, straining to inch ever closer to perfection.

What the West Has Forgotten

Now, I know that to modern ears, what I just described, this way of life, may sound odd. It may even sound cruel.

The ideal of many ideologies in our time has frankly become a world of perfect safety, a world devoid of risk or failure, where neither the glory of victory nor the shame of defeat.

Too often these days, we build downwards. We design our standards to ensure that no one will lose. We preoccupy ourselves more with the comfort of the worst than the potential of the best. We hold the most exceptional things among us hostage to the average, the ordinary, the mediocre.

The men who made the Parthenon built upwards. They held that the highest and most noble aspiration in life was to surpass all others, to strive to be the best in all things.

The ancient Greek city-states were filled with intense passion and rivalry and faction and conflict. But from that constant struggle for distinction came the great flowering of art and philosophy and political and intellectual energy that would transform a collective of Mediterranean cities into the birthplace of the greatest civilization in the world.

The thumos, as the ancient Greeks called it, the fire of passion, strength, courage, pride, is the heart of great civilization. And without it, without it, nations lose their will to fight, the will to strive, the will to survive. Today, too much of the West has forgotten this quality.

Over time, we in the West came to feel ashamed of the very things that made us exceptional. We felt embarrassed that our achievements set us apart from the rest of the world. Our prosperity somehow became a source of guilt. We no longer believed we deserved and had earned our greatness.

The word nationalism became a dirty word. And so we tore down our monuments. We condemned our own history. And in too many places, we taught our children to be ashamed of the countries they would inherit.

In the process, we opened our borders and outsourced our industry and allowed our militaries to wither and to decay.

And with every passing year, we seemed to outsource more of our sovereignty, transferring our decisions to global bureaucracies far beyond the reach of our control.

But others were all too happy to fill the vacuum that we left, the vacuum left behind by our weakness. And as the West's confidence faltered, its adversaries and its rivals only grew more assertive, building up their own wealth and their own power in our stead.

And now today, we find ourselves at a crossroads because the next decade and the decisions we make will write the story of the next century.

The course we take will determine whether the West maintains its place at the head of the world or resigns itself to a future of atrophy and servitude and decline.

We will either choose to act now or lose the choice to act at all.

Under President Trump, the United States has made its choice. We choose the unapologetic pursuit of national power, to take back control of our critical supply chains, to reindustrialize our economy, to rebuild our defense, to fight for dominance of the technologies and industries of the future.

We choose to reach for new frontiers in advanced manufacturing and superintelligence, in drones, weapons and warfare, in chips, minerals, cyber, and every other domain of human possibility; to unleash our energy, to rebuild our factories, to return our astronauts to the moon and launch a new age of exploration in space.

Now, for all their lofty ideals, the ancient Greeks were not naive.

They understood that nations have interests. They understood that statecraft requires prudence and diplomacy. But they also understood that it requires the ability to wield force when prudence and diplomacy fail.

They understood that power requires not only having the means to defend yourself. It requires the credibility that you are willing to use it.

This is the classical understanding of politics and of statecraft that the Trump administration hopes to reclaim.

Reclaim not just for our country, but for the whole of our civilization.

We believe that Europe can awaken from its long slumber and rekindle the fire that was lit here millennia ago. There are already signs across this continent.

We are witnessing what we hope will be the beginning of a generational shift: skyrocketing defense spending, a flurry of new partnerships and programs, expanded manufacturing and production following on the historic defense commitments made last year in The Hague.

Greece has been at the center of this shift. The people of this nation have proved themselves once again to be an indispensable friend to Europe and to the United States alike, on everything from energy to migration to defense, where Greece has been a model ally.

It is our sincerest hope that all of Europe will follow your example.

Though passions may at times have strained the bonds of affection between the United States and Europe, it must not be allowed to break them. Together, we must strengthen an alliance capable of confronting the threats of our age.

And we can because we do not believe the transatlantic friendship should be zero-sum. Quite the opposite.

Our vision is an alliance whose strength is greater than the sum of its parts. It is a vision we saw in action just last month in an unprecedented new agreement between the United States, Denmark, and Greenland.

An agreement that will reshape the Arctic and bolster the security of all of NATO. All three partners in that deal emerged victorious. All of Europe and NATO and the United States emerge safer, stronger, and more secure because of it.

We want to win together. We must win together.

Heroism and Duty

Now, it's become fashionable today to believe that enlightened foreign policy means prioritizing the global community over one's own people.

And I think here too we have much to learn from the men of ancient Greece because they knew that there was nothing selfish or wrong about loyalty to your nation, nor anything selfish or wrong about fighting to defend its interests above all else.

They believed fiercely in the ideal of the great man, the exceptional individual who obtains immortality through his own deeds. But they believed that glory and fame, those things were won through striving, sacrificing, and achieving greatly for something larger than yourself.

The recurring hero of the ancient Greek world was the man who was willing to pay any cost for a cause worthy of his loyalty.

We see this in Socrates, who refused to abandon the inquiry into truth even at the cost of his own life.

We see it in the legendary stand of 300 Spartans, surrounded and hopelessly outnumbered by the vast armies of Persia, who refused a chance to save themselves, choosing to fight to the last man rather than abandon their post or abandon their duty.

And we see it in the epic myth of Achilles, who's offered the choice to return home and live a long and peaceful life, but chooses instead to remain at Troy and perish in pursuit of eternal glory.

These are the qualities that would shape the Western moral imagination.

From the Christian martyr who refused to betray his faith to the patriot who gave his life for his country. From St. Thomas More to the Battle of the Alamo.

Running through the immortal closing words of the Declaration of Independence of the United States, which says, "We mutually pledge to each other our lives, our fortunes, and our sacred honor."

It is from the Greeks that the West inherited its sense of duty and unbreakable loyalty to one's code, one's cause, one's country.

Our heroes, the heroes of the West, are those who choose to remain faithful to their duty precisely when it is most difficult and painful to do so.

The man who is bound by his word. The soldier who will not abandon his post. The captain, the proverbial captain who goes down with the ship.

This is wholly different from what we see even now, for example, from fanatics like the radical mullahs of Iran, whose cult of death hails child suicide bombers as national heroes and portrays martyrdom as an end to itself.

Our heroes may be willing to die for their cause, but our heroes do not worship death.

It is precisely because we value life that we come to recognize the heroism in those who would sooner sacrifice it than betray their principles.

Now, we take the Western conception of these things, heroism, honor, duty, we take these things for granted. We assume that these somehow are universal to all people in all times and in all places.

They are not.

They are the product of a distinct character, a distinct character which arose here and shaped the whole story of the civilization that came after it, the civilization that we must fight to defend today with the same passion as our forefathers did.

A Shared Future

The men who built the Parthenon were succeeded by the architects of European Christendom, who raised the cathedrals of Milan, Cologne, and Florence.

The quest to perfect the human form that moved the ancient Greek sculptors found a new expression in Michelangelo.

The Greek philosophers' search for the structure of the universe was inherited by Copernicus, then Galileo and Kepler and Newton.

The hunger for new knowledge, that's what gave birth to Magellan's first expedition around the world, to Columbus' discovery of the Americas, and ultimately to Apollo 11's journey to the moon.

And the qualities that led Alexander to conquer the entire known world reappeared in Caesar and Charlemagne and Cortes.

And in America, that same tradition rediscovered itself anew. An open and wild land became the site of a great revival of Western imagination and ambition.

The Greek aspiration for new horizons became the American frontier spirit. The civilization of Athens and Rome transformed an infant seaboard republic into a continental empire.

The greatest Americans of every generation have carried the unmistakable features of their forefathers.

Born in Athens, formed by Rome, baptized in Christendom, hardened in the furnace of medieval Europe, endowed with the English genius for liberty, and then carried across the Atlantic to be reborn on the shores of a new world.

Together, we must now rediscover that spirit. We are at an inflection point.

An inflection point not only in the history of my nation, but an inflection point in the whole of our civilization.

The threats we face today are every bit as real as they were on the dramatic stage of antiquity.

National interest did not vanish in the face of international institutions. War did not disappear simply because we preferred peace.

Other states continued to arm, to seek influence, to compete for territory and technology and resources and markets and energy and power.

And now there is war again. There is new competition between great powers again. There is vulnerability, aggression, terrorism, a whole universe of new threats and attacks again.

And so we must rebuild our institutions and our alliances to face these threats together, understanding that the purpose of these things is not to abolish the sovereignty of the nations that constitute them.

It is to defend them, and that nations need not abandon their distinct identities in order to recognize their common interests.

We have built a model of that with our partners here in Greece, in our defense partnerships, in energy and technology, in our shared ambition to secure Europe's borders from the threats of mass migration.

You know, our friendship dates back to the earliest years of my nation. When Greece rose in 1821 to recover its independence after centuries of Ottoman rule, Americans recognized something familiar in that struggle.

Three years later, the great American statesman Daniel Webster delivered a famous address to Congress, helping bring the cause of the Greek Revolution before the representatives of the young American republic.

And he began by calling their attention to everything around them.

This is what he said in his speech. He said, "This free form of government, this popular assembly, this practice of free debate and public discussion, the contest of mind with mind, even the edifice in which we assemble, these proportioned columns, this ornamented architecture, all remind us that Greece has existed and that we, like the rest of mankind, are greatly her debtors."

Those words are as true today as they were when he said them.</blockquote.

Heather Mac Donald: Conservatives Spend Too Much Time Disputing "Rape Culture" Myth, While Excusing College Turning Into Drug-Fueled "Bacchanal"

Heather Mac Donald discussed the "Cornell 7" rape case on "Counterweight with Will Chamberlain," as New York Governor Kathy Hochul asked Letitia James, the attorney general, to consider charges.

Heather Mac Donald says the gang-rape story around the Cornell 7 is a fiction, and that Jane Doe took part voluntarily in a drug-soaked night at a fraternity. "Jane Doe drinks 10 drinks before even showing up at the fraternity, and then proceeds to have a beer there and proceeds to take ketamine. This is all voluntary, and she is walking in deliberately to a sex scene. The males don't have to do anything. You know, it's completely agreeable to everybody," she said.

"And when you have that, you're going to see males behaving boorishly. To be perfectly honest, there is sort of a meme around here in conservative circles that these males are evil. Frankly, I'm sorry. To me, this looks like it was instigated throughout by the female."

She says conservatives have spent their energy debunking the rape-culture myth and not enough time criticizing the bacchanal itself.

HEATHER MAC DONALD: Well, what's happening now is absolute hysteria and the embrace of a totally absurd fiction, which is that there was a horrible gang rape that occurred in 2024; that the law enforcement system was indifferent to the local district attorney. This is all the narrative that is shooting around the internet for the last week.

That narrative says that the district attorney was indifferent to the survivor, that Cornell was indifferent to the survivor, and now she's finally coming forward and suing, as a civil lawsuit, everything in sight, especially the deep pockets of Cornell. And the even broader narrative is that what happened at Cornell is emblematic of the rape culture that females are subjected to in the United States and on college campuses.

None of that is correct.

The one good thing that's come out of this is that, at some point, the alleged survivor, who was actually a voluntary participant in an absolutely disgusting orgy, was worried when word of this orgy got out. People were calling her a [unclear], and this upset her, so she decided to change the narrative.

I never would have known that the concept of [unclear], which is extremely useful for enforcing what should be norms of sexual propriety and modesty, was still active on college campuses. You know, it suggests that there's some people, at least, who are not completely on board a bacchanal of inebriated sex, where females deliberately drink themselves blotto, as happened here, precisely in order to lower their sexual inhibitions, in order to keep up with the liberated male libido that has been liberated from any kind of restraint by the 1960s culture of maximal sexual liberation and premarital sex whenever you want it.

So that's a good sign. Other than that, though, the underlying incident, which we can discuss, is completely squalid and depressing. And, you know, parents are paying God knows what the Cornell tuition is-it's probably like $80,000, $90,000-to have their children go and simply engage in these orgy-fests of drugs, ketamine, and drinking blotto, instead of using their time there productively to actually fill some knowledge into their empty noggin, is status quo in the university scene today. Very discouraging.

...

WILL CHAMBERLAIN: It seems like the actual correct answer to this is there should be no drug-fueled orgies on college campuses, whether or not the participants consent to that or not.

HEATHER MAC DONALD: Absolutely. And, you know, we had norms of female modesty. And I'm going to use an extremely dangerous word: chastity, God forbid, for good reason.

Because the male libido is voracious, and it is immoral, amoral-you know, mows down whatever is in its way. And marriage, the norm of marriage, of no sex until you're married, and females being gatekeepers, literally, to their own physical body, was a way of putting that libido in check and taming it, redirecting it towards noble ends of aspiration and accomplishment, so that you could actually woo a female to be willing to have intercourse with you, as opposed to having her drink herself blotto, as happened here with the so-called Jane Doe.

And I hope that her name is soon released, given that the males are being crucified with their names being released.

Anyway, Jane Doe drinks 10 drinks before even showing up at the fraternity, and then proceeds to have a beer there and proceeds to take ketamine. This is all voluntary, and she is walking in deliberately to a sex scene. The males don't have to do anything. You know, it's completely agreeable to everybody.

And when you have that, you're going to see males behaving boorishly. To be perfectly honest, there is sort of a meme around here in conservative circles that these males are evil. You know, they certainly should not be criminally prosecuted. That would be outrageous. They should not be held liable monetarily. But they committed some horrible sin here.

Frankly, I'm sorry. To me, this looks like it was instigated throughout by the female. And again, given male nature, if it's not forced to restrain itself, I'm frankly not surprised and I'm not all that horrified by what happened here from the male perspective.

But that, I know, puts me way out into the outer reaches of a strange blend of morality and amorality.

Rubio Denies Reports US Is Blocking Machado From Returning To Venezuela: "Oh, It's In The Newspaper, So It's True?"

JOHN HUDSON, WASHINGTON POST REPORTER: Mr. Secretary, thank you. John Hudson, Post. Will the State Department continue telling foreign governments not to facilitate [unclear] return to Venezuela? And a bigger societal-

MARCO RUBIO, U.S. SECRETARY OF STATE: You're talking like an auctioneer. Slow down He's talking fast. He's trying to get another question.

What was your first question?

JOHN HUDSON: Will the State Department continue telling foreign governments not to facilitate Maria Machado-

MARCO RUBIO: Who told you we said that?

JOHN HUDSON: That's been widely reported at this point.

MARCO RUBIO: By who? Who widely reported that?

JOHN HUDSON: The Wall Street Journal.

MARCO RUBIO: So it's in the newspaper; it's true? Because I can show you a lot of articles that are in the newspaper that are not true.

So this is-I always love these stories. You guys get somebody to tell you something, then you report it. So now it's an established fact, and then you ask me about it as if somehow I'm responding to something that's been fact.

I don't know what you're talking about, honestly. Just because you guys report something doesn't mean it's true. You know this, right? I'm sure you know this. So the premise of your question is not true.

We've never asked anyone not to let anybody else in anywhere in the world. I've told you-I've said this repeatedly about-so I don't even know how to answer a question that's based on something that is false.

Sam Altman on AI Fear: "People Need a Scapegoat," "I Take It Somewhat Personally"

OpenAI head Sam Altman says he understands why people project their anxiety about AI onto him, comparing it to how he once viewed Mark Zuckerberg, during an interview with Vanity Fair's Mark Guiducci.

"I do feel I've been mischaracterized. It's only somewhat frustrating," Altman told Vanity Fair. "I take it somewhat personally, but not that personally. I understand the human instinct here."

"I was very intent on not destroying the world before having kids. I didn't need kids to be like, 'Okay, I really shouldn't gamble with the future of-or we shouldn't really gamble with the future of civilization.'
And I am somewhat surprised about the number of people who have said, 'Oh, I'm really happy you have kids because now you won't, you know, take crazy catastrophic risk for all of us.' I wasn't going to do that anyway," he said.

MARK GUIDUCCI: I think a lot of people at this moment see AI as an evil force. And because of your association with it from the jump, you're seen as a villain. Do you feel you've been mischaracterized? Is that frustrating to you?

SAM ALTMAN: I do feel I've been mischaracterized. It's only somewhat frustrating.

I think if there were somebody else doing my job, people would have the same feelings and say the same things that probably wouldn't resonate with that person. I think it's not really about the specific person.

It is that people need a sink for the anxiety, a scapegoat. Just like, man, this change is happening to the world, and I need a person.

MARK GUIDUCCI: You can divorce it from how you feel about yourself.

SAM ALTMAN: I take it somewhat personally, but not that personally. I understand the human instinct here. I have felt this way towards other people in previous eras of technology. I feel bad about it now, but I think I get the human instinct.

MARK GUIDUCCI: Who is that?

SAM ALTMAN: Well, one example of someone that I know personally that I'll talk about is Mark Zuckerberg. I had a very evil caricature of him in my head in the early days of Meta. I didn't know him at the time. I know him not super well, but I know him now.

I think I was projecting whatever people project onto someone with what they perceive as too much power and influence over the world.

MARK GUIDUCCI: Sam, you are a parent of two. I don't have kids, but all of my friends who do talk about how having kids dramatically changes how they think about the future.

I can only imagine that's truer for you as someone who probably understands our future a lot better than most, and has a unique role in shaping it. Has having kids changed how you do your job?

SAM ALTMAN: Yes, but probably not in the way that you would expect, or maybe expect.

Having kids is by far the best thing I've ever done. I feel very blessed to have had many wonderful things happen to me in my life, but having kids is the number one by a huge margin.

It is everything people told me, including that you can't really understand how good it is, has all been true. And it is the most amazing, greatest blessing, most fun thing ever.

I was very intent on not destroying the world before having kids. I didn't need kids to be like, "Okay, I really shouldn't gamble with the future of-or we shouldn't really gamble with the future of civilization."
And I am somewhat surprised about the number of people who have said, "Oh, I'm really happy you have kids because now you won't, you know, take crazy catastrophic risk for all of us." I wasn't going to do that anyway.

But in terms of, well, I think there's all these things about the premium I put on being away from my kids or to do anything else, it's been wonderfully focusing for what I actually care about and want to prioritize in a time perspective.

And then watching the way kids experience the world, and thinking about, obviously we don't want to destroy the world, but what do we want to preserve, and what kind of world do we want to build?

And what are these magical human experiences, and, you know, how do we want kids to use this technology and be able to have agency, and develop their creativity and everything else?
